how does a uterus move out of place? and if it does, is surgery the only way to rectify it?

has anyone else faced the same problem?

Re: serious q

Re: serious q

yes sabi it is.

Re: serious q

I have heard that maybe lifting very heavy stuff or a trauma..can cause that.A dr may better explain it

Re: serious q

Is it painful? You would feel that if it happened right? Owww mommy help! That's crazy! It doesn't affect your child-bearing capabilities right?

Re: serious q

oye people i havent even given birth to anyone yet!:smack:

really carrying heavy things can cause this?

Re: serious q

Actually the condition is called Uterine prolapse.......

..... which basically means that the ligaments & pelvic floor muscles supporting the uterus and holding it in place become weak & thus it descends into the vaginal canal.....

it usually occurs in postmenopausal women who have had repeated vaginal births , some say due to the damage incurred during delivery to the pelvic floor along with loss of oestrogen effects ...
......however it can occur earlier in life as well .......

If it is mild prolapse nothing needs to be done however if the condition interferes with her lifestyle she will require surgical repair of the prolapse OR if she hasn't completed her family and is young she may elect to have a special supportive device inserted (pessary)

Re: serious q

lets say this woman i am talking about she hasnt had her menopause yet, she still gets her periods and she has been advised surgery, than?

Re: serious q

Yes it can happen, its not that the utuerus moves out of place, its that the pelvic floor muscles become weak and when a woman esp after childbirth lifts heavy things or sits squatting the uterus falls out .

Thats why pelvic floor exercises are very essential after childbirth.

Re: serious q

thanks ad baji:) and sheyn baji especially:)

Re: serious q

Aisha .....I cannot comment or advise unless I myself see the patient , as it depends on the extent of the prolapse ,any associated complaints as well as how much it interferes with her lifestyle.........

besides the etiology there are various precipitating factors like chronic cough , constipation etc that need to be addressed......

**If ur relative has been advised surgery by a private practitioner i would advise you to get a second opinion at the Govt. hospitals as their is always the element of profit to be gained from doing surgeries in the private sector that goes into such advice ( not all but more than a few ) **

Also it is very inportant to have the CORRECT repair surgery done as she may have associated complaints that may not have been looked into like incontinence which would require thorough investigation and special surgery or the outcome maybe worse than the initial problem....

As Adrasteia said pelvic floor exercises are essential and have shown upto 60% improvement if adhered to deligently.......

Re: serious q

sheyn baji but she has arthritis she cannot do pelvis floor excercises:bummer:
or can she?

Re: serious q

of course she can......... her arthritis in no way interferes with pelvic floor exercises......

Re: serious q

ok thanks for that but wouldnt her knees get affected when she sits on the floor and gets up again? she already prays using the chair. and she is not exactly thin so was wondering

Re: serious q

Pelvic floor exercises donot involve any strenous activity.

The best way to describe the exercise is like you know how when you really have to go pee but you cannot cause you arent near a toilet and you flex your muscles to keep it in??

Thats how you do pelvic floor exercises. You squeeze your muscles and let 'em go.

She can do 'em lying down, standing up, sitting or anything.

Re: serious q

oh ok thanks ad baji

Re: serious q

She can do pelvis floor excercises
