Serious concern if Chinese troops in Gilgit: India

New Delhi: The government has said it is “independently verifying” a report in the New York Times about the presence of Chinese troops in the Gilgit region of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, saying it would be a matter of “serious concern” if it turns out to be true.

The New York Times report says an estimated 7,000 to 11,000 soldiers of the Chinese Army are there in order to get road and rail access to the Gulf through Pakistan. (Read: Pakistan handing over control of PoK to China?)

“We have seen media reports, we are conducting an independent enquiry. If found true, it would be a matter of serious concern and will do everything necessary to ensure the safety and security of the nation,” said Vishnu Prakash, spokesperson, MEA.

The paper says: "China wants a grip on the region to assure unfettered road and rail access to the Gulf through Pakistan. It takes 16 to 25 days for Chinese oil tankers to reach the Gulf. When high-speed rail and road links through Gilgit and Baltistan are completed, China will be able to transport cargo from Eastern China to the new Chinese-built Pakistani naval bases at Gwadar, Pasni and Ormara, just east of the Gulf, within 48 hours.

Many of the PLA soldiers entering Gilgit-Baltistan are expected to work on the railroad. Some are extending the Karakoram Highway, built to link China’s Sinkiang Province with Pakistan. Others are working on dams, expressways and other projects."

Now whats this about

Re: Serious concern if Chinese troops in Gilgit: India

This is about NYT misleading, and entertaining Indian whining as usual.

Re: Serious concern if Chinese troops in Gilgit: India

  1. You are posting news related to Pakistan from an indian source? I thought only our bharati members did that :P
  2. Its not Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. It is Pakistan Administered Kashmir or Azad Kashmir :P
  3. Its not NYT its NDTV (for vigoratus)

Re: Serious concern if Chinese troops in Gilgit: India

Original NYTimes report from Pulitzer winning journalist :

Re: Serious concern if Chinese troops in Gilgit: India

As usual NYT adding mirch masala and Indian media & Indians and of course some great Paki reporters too (Just like India offered $500 million Aid to Pak :D ) jumping up and down with you know what. There are Chinese Engineers involved with many big constructions projects all over Pakistan. There are also speculations that Pak is going ahead with Iran Pak gas pipeline and China is interested.

Re: Serious concern if Chinese troops in Gilgit: India

Yes, for India there is concern if China wants access to gulf through Pakistan. Not only for India, but for USA as well. Their exports to middle east might get a big hit if China does get road/rail access to Gwadar.

Isn't it exactly that concern that India is sponsoring terrorism in Balushistan?

Re: Serious concern if Chinese troops in Gilgit: India

Your right it makes a lot of sense.

Re: Serious concern if Chinese troops in Gilgit: India

Indian terrorism in Pak is not new, whenever India has a master in A-Stan there is terror in Pakistan. Here is a lil history that dates back to soviet invasion of A-Stan.

Throughout the Afghan War RAW was responsible for the planning and execution of terrorist activities in Pakistan to deter Pakistan from support of Afghan liberation movement against India’s ally, the Soviet Union. The assistance provided to RAW by the KGB enabled RAW to arrange terrorist attacks in Pakistani cities throughout the Afghan War. The defeat of the Soviet Union in Afghanistan did not end the role of RAW in Pakistan, with reports that suggest that India has established a training camp in the town of Qadian, in East Punjab, where non-Muslim Pakistanis are trained for terrorist activities. Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has blamed India for funding the current upsurge of terrorism in Pakistan

Re: Serious concern if Chinese troops in Gilgit: India

Creating a secure trade route via Pakistan to the Middle East will be immensely beneficial for both China and Pak.

Re: Serious concern if Chinese troops in Gilgit: India

Even if they are there to build a road, whats the big deal? Main problem for India seems like China's access to seas and quick cargo turn-around.

Re: Serious concern if Chinese troops in Gilgit: India

Had Indians any good relations with Pakistan, the could have been busy in trade with central asian states.. but the Indians are kind of people who believe that nor shall we play neither we want others to play...

China Pakistan are working on the right track.. they should carry on

Re: Serious concern if Chinese troops in Gilgit: India

What sort of a source is this?? Is Qadian in Indian East Punjab, or in the Pakistan province of Punjab? Hmmn. I guess Ahmadis are the “non-Muslim Pakistanis” being trained for terrorist activities in Pakistan. Hmmn. And Nawaz Badmaash has not been PM for a VERY long time. The rest of the website is full of mercenary merchandise and definitely suspect “intel” for Rambo wannabes. What a horse hockey report!

Re: Serious concern if Chinese troops in Gilgit: India

Wow, if a same report about US troops come out, right now all the monkeys would be on roads.

I am taking this report very seriously, because our track record with China is pretty much same. In the 60’s we gave more then 1000Km area to China without a penny :smack:

So what if we are also giving Baltistan, after all CHINA is our greatest friend ever :chai:

Re: Serious concern if Chinese troops in Gilgit: India

Off course they should carry on, Pakistan will become just like Mexico or Canada to USA or Belarus, Ukraine to Russia. But the question came into mind is .. what will happened to the dream of “Fort of Islam” … :hehe:

Re: Serious concern if Chinese troops in Gilgit: India

I am sure every source is hog wash, coz India is never involved in terrorism home or abroad.

Re: Serious concern if Chinese troops in Gilgit: India

I'm not saying that it doesn't happen. I was in Bombay in 93: I KNOW it happens. I am saying that the source quoted has integrity issues.

And now you offer up a 10 year old article...Come on, guys: in order to be taken seriously you have to show reliable, verifiable, source material with integrity.

Pakistan’s Divide and Rule Policy in Gilgit-Baltistan

Senge H. Sering

****China has major presence in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir: Gilgit activist **

**
2010-09-02 13:20:00

China has massive presence in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, said a US-based activist from Gilgit who added that massive investments were made by Beijing in that frontier region to expand the Karakoram Corridor as a strategic pathway.

Washingon-based political activist Senge H. Sering, who was in India for over a year until March 2010 as Visiting Fellow at the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA), warned the Indian government about the Chinese presence over the years in Pakistani Kashmir.

Sering has spoken about massive investments made by China in the frontier region to expand the Karakoram Corridor as a strategic pathway to the sea lanes linking to West Asia.

Highlighting the multifaceted character of Chinese presence in the Gilgit-Baltistan province, Sering said China-Pakistan cooperation in the corridor includes expansion of the Karakoram Highway (KH), construction of a parallel railway line as well as oil and gas pipelines, which will give China rapid connectivity to Pakistani ports lying in the gateway to the Strait of Hormuz and Suez Canal.

The region’s close proximity to Afghanistan, Tajikistan and India, in addition to Tibet and Xinjiang, gives China diplomatic, strategic, logistical and political gains, he said.

He added that by linking the KH to Pakistani ports like Gwadar and Ormara, China will not just gain a strategic footprint and access to Afghanistan and the Persian Gulf but also could significantly influence the geopolitics and trade in the Indian Ocean Region as well as Central Asia.

Sering stated that the Gwadar-Karakoram Corridor combination endows China with a massive logistical advantage by significantly reducing the original distance of 16,000 km to a mere 2,500 km for the Chinese industrial areas to the Persian Gulf.

‘Similarly, Kashgar, which is 3,500 km away from Chinese eastern shores, finds itself at less than 1,500 km from Pakistani ports near the Strait of Hormuz,’ he claimed.

The activist warned that when linked to the upcoming Urumqi-Beijing rail link, the commute time from central and eastern China to the Pakistani ports will come to a ‘mere few hours’.

By using the corridor as an alternative supply route, China will be able to embark of huge stockpiling of oil reserves.

The KH expansion project, originally conceived by former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf, entails the conversion of the highway to a 90-foot-wide expressway. Costing over $6 billion, the corridor will also provide a direct link for China and Pakistan to Central Asia, Afghanistan and Iran.

He observed that Chinese dominance in this strategic Himalayan gateway will be a serious setback to India’s strategic interests in this region, including on the Kashmir dispute.

Sering expressed concern that China may use its presence in Gilgit-Baltistan as leverage in its border dispute with India by potentially demanding India’s guarantees of non-aggression or claim on the region for similar quid-pro-quos in the western and eastern sectors.
‘These interventions are strategic investments in the guise of economic support,’ he said.

He stated that through the Chinese presence and investments, Pakistan was attempting to offset local disgruntlement over lack of development in this backward region.

More importantly, Pakistan aims to permanently mitigate India’s claims of the province, which Senger says is ‘constitutionally part of J&K, and under Pakistan’s illegal occupation since 1947’.

Re: Serious concern if Chinese troops in Gilgit: India

Good. Very very good. We need more Chinese support to develop the country and cement our role in trade in Asia.

Re: Serious concern if Chinese troops in Gilgit: India

but what wil happen to atrocities by chinese on muslim uighurs. Oh right!!! china is a friend so pakistan wont mind:)

Re: Serious concern if Chinese troops in Gilgit: India

I think actually chinese want the whole of Kashmir. That way they can control both India, Pakistan and become a real power to rival United States. Slowly and surely they are winning this game.
