**Sept 11 attacks wouldn’t have happened if I was PM: Benazir **

NEW YORK: Former prime minister Benazir Bhutto said the September 11 terrorist attacks would never have happened had she been in power.

Speaking on Fox News talk show ‘Hannity and Colms’ on Monday night, she claimed that her government kept the Taliban from taking control of Afghanistan and did not permit militants and terrorists from crossing into Afghanistan.

“None of the attacks took place when I was prime minister,” said Benazir, who ruled Pakistan from 1988 to 1990 and again from 1993 to 1996.

“The two attacks on the World Trade Centre, the two attacks on the US embassies in Africa, the Cole ship in Yemen all took place when my party and I were in opposition,” referring to the 1998 bombings of the American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania and the 2000 attack on the USS Cole.

“Under my leadership, Pakistan fought the forces of extremism, militancy and terrorism,” she said. “I stopped the Taliban from taking over Afghanistan . . . After my overthrow, they invited in Osama (bin Laden). And he set up al-Qaeda.” Benazir also criticised President Pervez Musharraf for failing to crack down on terrorism and accused him of retaining advisers sympathetic to bin Laden.

Why doesn't this lady sit down happily in London or Dubai or wherever it is she has run off to, and enjoy the millions of rupees she has stolen from Pakistan, and surround herself with the luxurious, old paintings she has stolen from Pakistan's museums, and keep her mouth quiet ? Every few months, she comes out with some or the other ridiculous statement - what is wrong with her. Next thing you know, she'll be saying If i were PM, i would have discovered a cure for Aids and cancer by now. Doesn't this lady get it - you're out of politics, enjoy your millions of stolen rupees and let the rest of the country get on with their lives.

Benazir’s claim is reasonable.

In 1999 Musharraf foiled a US plan to capture or kill Bin Laden using Special Forces.

.. I saw that interview too.. she was very rational and her views were up to point.. I know if we dont like someone all good points will be in background and we will statrt slurs as some have done in their replies.. she gave an interview just after Sept 11 at cnn and said rightly that her government advised Talibans not to go alone but make aliance with Northern parties.. but those idiots blood hungry Talibans killed thousands in Kabul and captured it and thought they alone had the right to live in the world..
If Benazir Govt was around during Sept 11 time and her Govt had taken same steps as Musharaf (she praied Musharaf for taking side with USA at that time) the same persons who are praising Musharaf would ironically would had called her Kafir, non-muslim and more as they have said bout her whenever she tried some steps against extremists..

The woman is clearly frustrated. She will come out with many more "Pearls of Wisdom". Earlier when a reporter asked that it was her interior minister who had encouraged the Taliban, she replied, "We supported the Good Talibans, others supported the Bad Talibans".

And for those who think that it was Osama who masterminded and executed the 9-11, their brains are where their ----s are.

If she is as solid in giving proof of her claims as she is in accusing others of mishandling, she would actually get some support. Just saying the nothing bad happened when she was in power is similar to say the Republicans are responsible for Sep 11th.

I want to know where are the news clipping from her time in office where she put into print all her claims? Where did she said anything against extremism when she was PM? Any proof of all those executive orders?

Supply of F-16 Fighter Planes Was Halted on Benazir’s Behest: Report

**NEW YORK: Twice elected Prime Minister and Chairperson of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Benazir Bhutto had played a significant role in stopping the United States administration from supplying F-16 fighter planes to Pakistan, reveals the findings of a report by US Foreign Relation Committee for South Asian affairs. ** :mad:

The report, which was released by US administration after almost 15 years, disclosed that **due to Benazir Bhutto’s assurances that her country would not use nuclear technology as deterrence, had made her very popular in the hierarchy of US. **

The report says that **when Benazir Bhutto was poised to form her government in late 90’s, she had given several assurances to US administration about Pakistan’s nuclear programme and requested the Washington to suspend the supply of F-16 fighter planes to her country. **

This request was made at a time when Pakistan had received the first supply of planes and negotiations were going on for the provision of second supply, the report maintains.

It is worth mentioning here that Pakistani governments in the past had apparently cited Pressler Amendment a main hurdle in the supply of F-16 fighter planes to Pakistan by US.

However, findings of the report says that former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto had contacted the US administration on the cancellation of order well in advance before US moved Pressler Amendment in the Congress.

The former Premier accomplished all this through her close aides while at the same time Indian lobby were also pressing US to impose arms embargo on Pakistan.

The report further says that Benazir Bhutto assured US that her government would not make atomic bombs from nuclear technology and pledged to remove all concerns regarding Pakistan’s nuclear programme. American officials acknowledged that statements of Benazir Bhutto and assertion of her mother, Nusrat Bhutto to allow US officials to inspect the Kahuta Atomic Plant had impressed US administration.
