Separation VS Divorce

Salaam…
In case that a husband and wife (Both are Muslim) are separated (a wife moves back to her family and a husband lives in his house.) and they are not yet coming to an agreement of divorce, does the Islam law state about the period of separation at all? For how long a couple is separated and that means they are automatically divorced?
