Separation of Church from State.

So what are your thoughts about the separation of Church from State? Why did it happen? and what role it played in the lives of Christians? How it affected the political arena in yesterdays and todays world.

What is the stand point of Islam on this issue…

(to make it simple, I am talking about Secularism)

Re: Separation of Church from State.

It was the revival of the ancients that initiated this movement.

Erasmus was the one that started it, however he was still a catholic.

Islam totally rejects it. Its contrary to the belief of Islam.
THerefore, must adhere to Laws of God than to indulge in such thoughts.

Re: Separation of Church from State.

it iwll take some time for islam to secularise itsef because all others have secularised
in various extent . since islam is only 1400 years old it will take some time to grow out of
religen. because other countries are forging ahead and people gong to ask why we are
stagnet?

Re: Separation of Church from State.

^ Islam doesn't need to secularize. Its pure in its form, and much better than secularism.

Re: Separation of Church from State.

there is no such thing as islamic god working for muslims only and created everything for muslims and god exist only for mulsims and muttual loylty
existis between god and muslims

Re: Separation of Church from State.

Look at what "secular" India did to the Muslims of Gujarat and Kashmir - that is what Hindu's call forging ahead in the world.

Re: Separation of Church from State.

that is failure of stated goal that does not mean we have to abandon democracy and secularisim.

Re: Separation of Church from State.

No, but it doesn’t mean we put our faith in them either.

Church and state seperation is meaningless in Islam. There is no Church. This is not a trivial difference, nor is this a cop-out.

For 1400 years, the ruiling class was NOT the same as the clerical class.

We are stagnent for obvious reasons…secularism (or lack of it) is not one of the reasons.

All and sundry admit that at one point we were on the right track…and we were anything but secular during our “golden” age.

Those days are gone, but if we did it once…with a lot of hard work (and this is the key, WORK) we can do it again.

The answer to this question is not one word.

Re: Separation of Church from State.

Hum, I sense some confusion between the words "Democracy" and "Secularism".

Re: Separation of Church from State.

Although the theology of Christianity is more conducive to a separation of Church and State, in practice the Church was very powerful in mediaeval Christendom, at a time when religion played a marginal role in the Islamic world. This is what allowed free thought to flourish in cities like Cordoba and Baghdad and Damascus and Bokhara, making these cities the leading places of enlightenment in the Middle Ages. However, Islamic countries have in the modern times been beset with all sorts of ideologies, such as Islamism, Communism and Ethnic Nationalism, all exploited for the purpose of seizing power. None of these ideologies have resulted in any economic or scientific advancement.

The best way forward is to reject all "ideologies" and ideological states. Just work hard, play hard, makes lots of money, accumulate wealth and know-how.

Re: Separation of Church from State.

Was it only a free thought in Islam that made so many discoveried and scientific advances during that time? Or the stress to eductate one's self, to discover the universe?

Re: Separation of Church from State.

No it was rather the effort by Syrian and Persian scientists to preserve Greek and Indian scientific knowledge.
