*Sense* of Humour

How does a person develops his sense of humour. We come across different people in life. Some people only smile whom you never find laughing, while others laugh too much at things which others might not find funny. (maybe odd).

Yes, it depends upon the environment, company, country ..etc. but I am really curious to know if there can be any universal standard. Like something which makes everyone smile

I personaly think, anything which touches your heart makes you smile. But then, why does it also vary from person to person ?

Re: Sense of Humour

see, there is a difference.

You have to understand that every one has sense of humour…

However, there are very few guys like me :smooth: who have good sense of humour …

and then there are people who say corny, old, ghissy pitty lines and think that they are very funny, laugh out loud and make others laugh… I find humour in that too.. does not make them humourous but that’s my sense of humour :roman:

Re: Sense of Humour

Hey guys have you heard that in some Hadith it is said that laughing out loudly is not considered good...something along that line...Then...if thats true..then Allah help me...I crack myself up too..dont even need outside influence at times too:D :D

Re: Sense of Humour

^ According to that Hadith laughing too much makes the heart dead (spiritually) and takes away noor from face.

Also in another hadith too much laughing is an indication of lack of fear and conciousness of the day of judgement. That is why the Prophet (saw) only used to smile.

p.s. I have read that hadith on a number of places but I appologise that the source is not available to me at the moment

Re: Sense of Humour

does a good sense of humor require a laughter --NO
a good sense of humor only requires good judgemental behaviours. a person understanding all situations around him knows what to say at the right time .
sense of humor may not necessarily be needed for laughing purposes . it is neede in all other activities equally . the difference is some people see it and some don't

Re: Sense of Humour

Please... laughter is a God given blessing that has many proven emotional and physical benefits. Don't let the culture of 7th century Arabia hold you back from letting out a big ol' belly laugh. It will do you good. (BTW, it's great for the heart. It should read that one who doesn't laugh is the one with the dead heart).

Re: Sense of Humour

I would like to emphasise here that as I mentioned that in the hadith it was mentioned "Too much" laughing. As we all know excess of everything is bad.

p.s. I didnt mean to offend anyone but to know the views of different people and share what I have observed.

Re: Sense of Humour

Nothing wrong with having a laugh and being happy, one hadith that comes to mind is when our mother Aisha :razi2: says the Prophet :saw: laughed so much at her toy unicorn that his back teeth showed.

What we’re being warned against is laughing like a drunk idiot all the time as is the customs amongst many ill-mannered, careless, uncivilised, uncultured people.. Muslims are meant to carry themselves in a dignified manner which reflects their inner serenity/peace, this behaviour comes naturally to those who are devoted to Islam from the peace/serneity/calm I mentioned and they’re always smiling like a cheshire cat, it’s like being on a constant high/chilled out, sadly many Muslims like myself who are far from Islam don’t always get that feeling…

I’ve found Muslims who follow 7th centruy Arabian Islam to be far calmer and happier than the so called “party loving” boisterous types who in reality are filled with despression, void and saddness on the inside.. and it shows on their faces..

PS. I wish people who don’t believe in or understand our religion/culture would stop making ignorant comments.

Re: Sense of Humour

no- but my point of view was totally different . a good sense of humor does not have any connection with the ability to laugh or not . it is the ability to make others laugh
:)

Re: Sense of Humour

^ Hmm...makes sense. I agree.

Re: Sense of Humour

I would like to do an addition to what you have said.

Good sense of humour "not only" means to have the ability to make others laugh BUT also have a sense of what to laugh at and what not to laugh at.

example. If in a funnerl, a person starts laughing at the way some person in the funeral is making a crying face than that person sure doesn't has a good sense of humour.

Re: Sense of Humour

Are you talking about comments like this: "...in some Hadith it is said that laughing out loudly is not considered good" cuz I don't blame you, I wouldn't want that kind of misunderstanding to be propagated either.

But "laughing out loud" is very different than "laughing like a drunk idiot all the time".

BTW, I said 7th century Arabic "culture", not "Islam". There is a difference that some distinguish between and some don't.

Re: Sense of Humour

I agree with seminole.
laughing is good for you, its an expression of joy.
I cant see why it would be disallowed, I can see a caution to try and avoid laughing in a crude manner all the time whic would eb undignified and annoying.
lets not confuse the two. I guess somewhere something got lost in trasnlation.
