Sending your child to private Islamic school

We registered our daughter to a private islamic school today for coming year for Pre-K. MasAllah i was very impressed by the teachers and the overall atmosphere when we went for an open house. Is there anyone else who has kids that go to Islamic schools and have you disliked or liked the overall education system for kids?

Re: Sending your child to private Islamic school

I do no thave anything to add but I am looking forward to the answers.

We tried to put our son in islamic pre-school, my husband was very much interested in it but the whole situation was not working for us as pre-school ends at 3 and then we had no-one to pick him up, we both get off at 5.

I am confused about private islamic school vs public schools myself.

Re: Sending your child to private Islamic school

My bhabi works at one in Toronto, and my 3 nephews all attend that school. From what I have heard, this school is top-notch. Unlike the old days, where an Islamic school would take anyone as a teacher, this school only has teachers that have graduated from Teachers College, and are certified teachers with the board of education. This school also doesnt operate out of a masjid or warehouse. They purchased an actual public school and have made it an Islamic school.

My brother and bhabi are very happy with the education my nephews are receiving. They are getting proper Islamic education, along with getting proper education in math, science, etc. The only thing that I find a little off, especially since it is a private school, and they take a pretty hefty tuition fee from all students, is that they are always low on school supplies. This could be because they are still paying off the debt of buying an actual school.....but you usually only see this type of thing (low on school supplies) in public schools where funding is being cut constantly. The teachers usually ask the parents then if they want to donate anything to the class. Usually every year, I will go to different stores and find as much stuff as I can (that can fit in my budget) and donate it to their classes. Im lucky that 2 of my nephews that go there are twins, so they are in the same class, so I only buy for 2 classes rather than 3, LOL! But the teachers are very appreciative of it.

Overall, I think Islamic schools have come a long way in the last few years. They are much better now.

Re: Sending your child to private Islamic school

does she teach at Olive Grove?

Re: Sending your child to private Islamic school

Yes, she works at Olive Grove! But she is not a teacher, she is an administrator.

Re: Sending your child to private Islamic school

it's a good school. I know some people that work there.

It's great that her kids are in the environment.

Re: Sending your child to private Islamic school

I thought all Islamic schools are private i.e. not government funded. Isn't that right?

Re: Sending your child to private Islamic school

that is right.

Re: Sending your child to private Islamic school

^^ So there is nothing such as private or public Islamic school right? I am just trying to get this right... So I know all of this when its time for my son to go to school. I could just be searching for Islamic schools (not private/public) and would get a list?

Re: Sending your child to private Islamic school

the government does not fund Islamic Schools or any religiuos schools except for Catholic Schools.

and yes, just search islamic schools.

Re: Sending your child to private Islamic school

I live in Colorado & we only have one Islamic school but it does get funded by the government & compared to other Islamic school in different states of US this one has very low fees. Its still a good school but so far is only till 6th grade.

Coolgirl its a very good initiative on your part as a parent. Good luclk. In my experience just because you send your child to an Islamic school they are not guaranteed to come out best but then public schools also don't always produce bad students/individuals.

My family's experience has been really good regarding my brother who went to an Islamic school. His vocabulary increased so much with in a year & his course work was more demanding than public school work. After all Islamic schools are private schools & most of the time even though you are paying a hefty fees its worth it.

Just make sure that growing up you have open communication with your daughter about the things she is learning about Islam & she as an individual is on the same page as you & your husband when it comes to religious thoughts.

Also it depends on the kind of school your child is attending. In US at least you'll occasionally find schools that are running out of masjids/madrassas with are not even board certified.

Another thing to keep in mind & this is for everyone reading is that Islamic education starts at home. Its how we act as parents. I know someone whose children go to public schools but are MashaAllah so respectful & probably know more Surahs than couple of Islamic school going kids.

Re: Sending your child to private Islamic school

I live in karachi and my son is going to one of the best Islamic/Arabic school mashallah. It is wonderful that a 4.5 year old can understand quran while listening to your routine tilawat , is well behaved and can show confidence.

The grooming is good and focused on pure islamic value not hybrid values. More then happy and that is why in process of getting my daughter admitted in the same school.

Re: Sending your child to private Islamic school

Depends on the school. All Islamic school are not created equal.

Al Noor in NJ gets very high reviews and my friends have had their children in there since pre-school and rave about that entire school experience. Most kids have test exceptionally well and go into Ivy league schools.

Other schools my friends have had to pull out their children due to subpar education.
