Sending Money From Pakistan to Aboad

Not sure where to post this, thought this would be the best place.

What ways are there to send money from Pakistan to the US? Not large sums of money…just around a $1,000 and under. Fast and easy ideas please.

Thanks!

western union

yeh ulTii Ganga kaise bah nikli?

Western Union, fast, easy and nominal charges.

Re: Sending Money From Pakistan to Aboad

Dont use western union. They’ll ask you to confirm the identity of the person in Pakistan by asking you to have the dude in Pakistan fax his ID. Which is ridiculous, it’s cause of this I canceled my account in WU.

Use “Hoondi” instead, usually you’ll find a place in a Pakistani neighborhood. It’s usually an uncle in a small cramped room surrounded by stacks of money. Looks like a desi Don, but they will have branches everywhere in Pakistan and if you chat up the guy in the shop he can wave the fees for you. Try to engage the uncle in political talks, that’s like eargasms for uncles.

I’ve made friends with all the uncles at the Hoondi place that I use, and I never pay fees when sending money.

Re: Sending Money From Pakistan to Aboad

yaaraa, are you preaching ‘illegal’ means of money transfer. if caught, one could be charged under ‘money laundering’ crime.

Western Union is a legal means of money transfer.

what’s the problem with providing ID?

Re: Sending Money From Pakistan to Aboad

Hoondi is not illegal it’s very legal. It’s money transfer just like western union and they have a license for it. But they charge a lot less fees and have lots of branch locations in Pakistan.

Re: Sending Money From Pakistan to Aboad

i am really puzzled to read this because it doesn’t have any paper trail…so, how can it be legal? do they give you an official receipt for the money you transfer? if no, then it can not be a legal transaction.

having a license doesn’t mean they those license holder agencies do ALL the transaction legally.

Re: Sending Money From Pakistan to Aboad

I think you meant “Hundi”. It is illegal.

Re: Sending Money From Pakistan to Aboad

There are branches in USA. Which practice remittence. If it were illegal it would never allowed to be practiced in the states. It simply transfer of money. Western union does the same exact thing. The only difference is that they have established themselves in the world.

Re: Sending Money From Pakistan to Aboad

@KKF

They are private companies just like WU but on small scale and to run them they need officials licences from central bank of their countries.

Re: Sending Money From Pakistan to Aboad

ok thanx but my other question was:

-do they give you an official receipt for the transaction?
-do they have a paper-trail of the money transfer to prove that you transmitted the money through legal means?

Re: Sending Money From Pakistan to Aboad

Yes the do. transaction ID is mentioned, sender name, date, etc.

Yes, remember they have to have the cash to pay their customers. How they get large sum of money everyday, they get it from the banks. The banks are not out of the loop, they still keep record of all the money and get the details of sender and receiver.

Re: Sending Money From Pakistan to Aboad

oh i see…

…the traditional name “HunDii” or “Hawala” way of transaction was like money laundering so they should change the name of their business or else customers will think of it as a shady business.

thank you!

Re: Sending Money From Pakistan to Aboad

Open a dollar account in a bank and transfer money via that bank. I would strongly suggest a foreign bank with branches in Pakistan like Citibank.

Re: Sending Money From Pakistan to Aboad

Thank you everyone for your help!!

Can I open a foreign currency (dollar) account at the Lahore Citibank branch? Would that allow me to transfer money into and out of my Pakistani Citibank account and into my US Citibank account???

If so, this is perfect!

Re: Sending Money From Pakistan to Aboad

Yes, you should be able to do that. If the recipient has a citibank account too than you can do the transaction online as well. Otherwise it could be sent to any bank abroad. However, the currency you are sending the money in should match the currency of the destination country. Meaning that if you are sending money to USA you should have a dollar account. People send tuition money to thief kids studying abroad too from Pakistan. It’s called the foriegn exchange transfer service.

Re: Sending Money From Pakistan to Aboad

You can also use standard chartered or other bank.

Re: Sending Money From Pakistan to Aboad

So I have a bank account in Pakistan, but it’s not a dollar account. Can the bank do currency exchange for me? After that I’ll just open a dollar account and transfer money to the US? Did I understand this correctly? Eastern?

Eastern, Ekumunng, KKF and everyone else you have been tremendous help!

For some reason I thought I was unable to transfer money out of Pakistan.

Re: Sending Money From Pakistan to Aboad

You can go to any liscened money changer and get dollars and then open a bank account. I think banks do that too. You can ask them. There is a minimum amount for opening a dollar account though, so you can find out what that is, each bank may have a different limit. Yes, you can send money out. Many kids go abroad for studies and unless they are citizens or permanent residents they are not allowed to work there besides 20 hours a week in campus etc at least in the US. Parents have to show their bank balance showing they have enough to pay for their kids studies or the visa is not issued. Obviously, these parents send money to their kids.
