Senator Enver Baig declared Nasim Ashraf incompetent/Ashraf to file law suit

Senator Baig terms Nasim Ashraf ‘most incompetent’ official

KARACHI: Senator Enver Baig, a member of Senate’s Standing Committee on Sports, will go on another token hunger-strike to protest against ‘false promises’ made by Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Nasim Ashraf regarding the implementation of a new PCB constitution.

“Seeing an incompetent and dishonest man like Nasim Ashraf running cricket, which is our national passion, makes my heart weep,” said Baig, who went on a token hunger strike earlier this month against prevailing ad-hocism in the PCB.

Baig said that he would stage a similar protest in Islamabad next month to raise his voice against false promises made by Ashraf last year when he said that ad-hocism would end in PCB with the implementation of a new constitution.

“Almost four months have passed since that deadline given by Nasim Ashraf over the implementation of the PCB constitution and it is clear that they were all false promises,” Baig told ‘The News’. “He has betrayed the whole nation and it clearly shows that the man is dishonest,” he expressed.

Ashraf had promised last year that he would implement the Board’s new constitution by January 31 this year. However, he has been unable to fulfil the promise. PCB officials claim that the delay is not their fault as the draft of the constitution has been with the Attorney General of Pakistan.

“These are all excuses. The fact is that Nasim Ashraf wants to prolong his one-man show as long as he can by sticking with ad-hocism,” he explained. It has been almost seven years that the PCB is bring run on an ad-hoc basis that allows the PCB chairman — a man handpicked by President General Pervez Musharraf — sweeping powers. There are hopes that the implementation of a new constitution would bring a positive change in the national cricket set-up.

Baig said that Ashraf has misused his power and alleged that he is the “man responsible for Pakistan’s World Cup debacle.”

“Ashraf was a member of the PCB ad-hoc committee for three years and during most of that period he was the de facto chief of the Board because of his close association with Musharraf,” he explained.

Baig said that Ashraf’s involvement with cricket has been catastrophic for Pakistan. “He is the most incompetent person in the PCB and has ruined Pakistan cricket. He should be immediately removed from his post,” he said.

Senators want meeting with Nasim to discuss PCB constitution

KARACHI: Members of Senate’s Standing Committee on Sports are sharpening their knives for a potentially-explosive meeting with PCB chairman Nasim Ashraf likely to be held later this month.

Four of the members have sought a meeting of the committee to discuss a series of cricket-related issues ranging from the implementation of a new PCB constitution to the hiring and firing process in the Board.

Senator Enver Baig, a member of the Senate Committee, told ‘The News’ on Sunday that he and fellow members have sought for a meeting with the PCB chief as soon as possible.

“All of us are concerned over the state of affairs in the PCB and want to know what happened to its new constitution and also about the people it is hiring and firing,” said Baig.

In the meeting, the Senators want “to seek explanation from the Board chairman about the non-implementation of the PCB constitution in spite of his firm commitment to the Standing Committee that the constitution will be enforced by January 31, 2007.”

The members also want the PCB chief to provide the list of employees terminated since August 2006 to date and the reason for their termination. They are also seeking a list of appointments carried out by the Board since August 2006.

In addition, the committee is asking for a complete list of PCB employees, both permanent and contractual, with details of their salaries and other perks.

Baig suspects that the Board has hired several officials in recent months and is now paying them ‘fat salaries’.

The members of the ‘paid’ national selection committee are also in the committee’s radar. The members have asked the Board to submit the CVs of all the national senior and junior selectors. They want to know the criteria of appointing the selectors, their salaries and other perks.

The Senators want the Board to provide Pakistan’s Test and ODI rankings and have also sought details of the contracts to be given to the leading national cricketers. The committee would also discuss the funds spent on cricket infra-structure by the Board from Jan 2004 to May 2007.

“We have waited for several months but it doesn’t seem that the chairman of the PCB ad-hoc committee is in the mood to implement a new constitution,” said Baig.

The Senator is an avid critic of ad-hocism in the PCB and says that he is making efforts to ensure that the Board is run by elected officials in the future.

Baig has time and again criticised the PCB for failing to implement its constitution and believes that Ashraf doesn’t have the credentials to run the Board in a professional manner.

He is also preparing for a legal battle against Ashraf, who announced his plans to sue the Senator for calling him dishonest and incompetent in an interview with ‘The News’ last month. Baig has responded by filing a privilege motion against the PCB chairman for calling him a ‘sick mind’ in a press conference earlier this month.

PCB chief summoned by senate committee

Nasim Ashraf, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), has been asked to appear before a Senate Standing Committee on Sports to answer specific queries. This comes just days after Enver Baig, a Senator and a member of the committee, had requested the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to order an audit into the accounts of the PCB.

**The committee has invoked Rule 163(4) of the Rules of the Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Senate (1988) to make Ashraf personally appear before the committee, and he has to do so within 14 days, which means that a meeting has to take place by June 23. **

The “non-implementation” of the PCB constitution tops the agenda laid out by the standing committee. Ashraf has been directed to submit financial records and details regarding the PCB’s employees, appointments, contracts and the newly appointed national selection committee.

He has also been asked to provide details of Pakistan’s Test and ODI performances from January 2000 to May 2007 and also expenses incurred on stadia from January 2004 to May 2007.

This adds to the war of words between Ashraf and Baig, which has been on for some time now. Baig has been on record in Pakistan daily The News on May 30, expressing his frustration at the non-implementation of the constitution and also termed Ashraf “the most incompetent person in the PCB”. He had earlier gone on a token hunger hunger strike to protest what he called the “ad-hocism” in the PCB.

Ashraf had filed a lawsuit against Baig in response to his comments to the newspaper, which in turn led Baig to file a privilege motion against Ashraf for labelling him a “sick mind”. It was in response to the lawsuit that Baig had requested an audit of the PCB. Baig, who belongs to the opposition Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) , has been at odds with Pakistan cricket administrators before, having grilled Shaharyar Khan, the former chairman of the PCB, on similar issues.

War of words between Nasim Ashraf and Enver Baig ends
PCB chairman, senator withdraw charges

Nasim Ashraf, chairman Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), and Enver Baig, senator and member of Senate Standing Committee on Sports, have withdrawn their charges that were levied due to the recent statements made against each other.

A committee meeting was held yesterday under the chairmanship of Tahir Mashahdi in Islamabad which Ashraf was asked to attend. In the course of the meeting, Baig withdrew his recent allegations against the PCB chairman when he had called the PCB chief a “dishonest and incompetent person.” In response, Ashraf expressed his regrets over dubbing Baig a ‘sick man’ in a recent statement and also assured the committee that he will withdraw the legal notice served on the senator.

The committee has summoned a requisitioned meeting on June 26, according to Baig, in which the PCB chairman will answer various questions relating to the financial and administrative affairs of the board. Ashraf has also been asked to produce the details of PJ Mir’s package that was offered to him as the media manager of Pakistan cricket team during the World Cup.

PCB is currently involved in placing a coach for the national team before it departs for the short tour of Scotland as well as offering central contracts for which a list of 30 has already been handed over by the selection committee.
