Senate Elections

I think it’s most likely Noorani or Wasim Sajjad to be the head of Senate.

Have your say.

ISLAMABAD: **Elections to the Senate will be held on February 4 for the provinces and February 8 for Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) and the federal capital (Islamabad).

[President General Pervez Musharraf approved the holding of Senate elections on these dates.**

The Election Commission will now issue schedule for these elections. The Senate will consist of 100 members.

Twenty-two members will be elected from each province, which will have 14 general seats, four reserved for women and four reserved for technocrats including ulema.

**Eight members will be elected from Fata, in a manner the president may prescribe. Twelve National Assembly members from Fata will be the electoral college for senators from Fata on February 8.

Islamabad will have four seats: two general seats, one woman and one technocrat.**

Each provincial assembly will be the electoral college for electing senators from the respective province, while four members of the Senate from Islamabad will be elected by the National Assembly which will meet on February 8.

The law provides that one of the two senators elected on the general seats from the federal capital will retire after three years, the other will complete his 6-year term.

The technocrat elected from the federal capital will retire after three years while the woman elected from there will serve for six years.

Of the women and technocrats elected by provincial assemblies half of them in each case will retire after three years, and the other half after six years.

Similarly, seven members from each province’s basic quota of 14 seats will retire after three years while the other seven will serve for 6 years. Four Fata senators will be retired after three years while the remaining four will serve for 6 years. The decision that who will retire after three years and who after 6 years will be made through draw, said a senior official.

Looks like former Governor of Sindh, Muhammadmian Soomro could be Senate’s new Chairman.

Soomro Likely to be Senate Chairman

ISLAMABAD: Former Sindh governor Muhammadmian Soomro is likely to be the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid-i-Azam (PML-QA)'s preference for the Senate chairman’s slot.

Soomro is also the choice of President General Pervez Musharraf, an informed official told The News. The president will give exemption to Soomro from the two-year ban on governors on contesting and holding public offices, the official said.

Soomro recently tendered his resignation from the gubernatorial office to make way for Dr Ishratul Ebad, nominee of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, to assume the office. “Soomro has an unblemished career as banker and governor, and meets the requirements to become the Senate chairman,” a cabinet minister, privy to the decision, told The News. "He is a cool minded, composed person, who will be able to handle the Senate proceedings that are going to be animated in view of the formidable opposition, " the minister said.

Soomro will contest the Senate elections from Sindh on the PML-QA’s ticket and will win the seat easily because of the party’s hold. The minister said there was a strong possibility that Soomro would be elected unanimously because he was a non-controversial figure and he proved this during his incumbency as Sindh governor.

In some earlier cases, President Musharraf refused exemption from the two-year restriction on government servants to enable them to contest and hold public offices. The minister said by electing a representative from Sindh on one of the most important civilian offices, the smaller provinces would get even more share in the top federal positions. The Senate chairman becomes acting president of Pakistan in the absence of the president.

For weeks, Soomro remained undecided about contesting the October general elections. He was likely to continue as Sindh governor had there not been an agreement between the PML-QA and the Muttahida on the office as part of their coalition arrangement.

PML-QA’s influential lot has decided to sponsor Muhammadmian for the top Senate post. Till the time he remained the Sindh governor, his uncle, former National Assembly Speaker Illahi Bux Soomro, tried to have good relations with him. But the moment he stepped down Illahi Bux accused him of manipulating the elections in his Sindh constituency to ensure his defeat.

Muhammadmian did not react to his uncle’s tirade. However, his sister, Maleeha, harshly responded to rebut Illahi Bux’s accusation on his behalf. Within the PML-QA, Illahi Bux will try to block Muhammadmian’s nomination as the Senate Chairman. But, his voice might not be heard when Muhammadmian is also being supported by President Musharraf.

maleeha is such a loser.the womans daughters were known to be "gashtees" while they were in opf in islamabad.also maleeha herself had a court case a few years back where she accused her cousins of trying to steal her lands that were not even in her name.ive seen her get drunk at social gatherings in islamabad and lahore..so how can anyone beliebe her when she doesent have any character?

the woman is a psyco..i wouldnt believe anything that she says.

Lodhi?!?!

Thanks for clearing that up Zakk.

Btw, is Maleeha Lodhi going to be a Senate member?

I'm not sure if she is contesting PT, senate seats need a lot of money, because you need votes from MPA's and many MPA"s make a lot of money by selling their votes.

She'd probably have to join PML(Q) because BB ain't happy with her after she became ambassador under Mush.

If Maleeha Lodhi becomes a Senator, that would be great. But I'd rather love to she her working as a Human Rights Worker because we need people like her to go to the villages, poor people, who need basic medical facilities.

Though, it's Doc Shehba's choice what she really wants. She can do even more if she becomes a Senator. Btw, she worked as an Ambassador to USA from 1993-94 to 2001-02; almost 8-9 years.

Don't worry Zakk, if Maleeha wanna be a Senator, Mush's full backing will get her all the way. ;)

You know that by heart :D

Tiger, you want someone like that to become a senator? really says something about your moral vlaues. :nook:

Ahmed,

You believed whatever Sherlock said. :nook: So sad!

Not necessarily Tiger, it’s not like one doesn’t know maleeha lodhi otherwise. But you are the fan Tiger, YOU should have challenged him which you didn’t.

Bhai, If I started challenging every Guppy, then I’ve to sit to all day along on Gupshup. :hehe:

Let me play Arcade dude.

I wouldn’t mind it at all if you stayed all day long at Arcade rather than Gupshup.

Pro-government = 44 seats

PML (QA) – 32 seats
MQM – 6 seats
NA – 3 seats
PPP (S) – 2 seats
PML (F) - 1 seat

Independents – 4 seats

Opposition = 40 seats

MMA – 17 seats
PPPP – 11 seats
PML (N) – 4 seats
ANP – 2 seats
PKMAP – 2 seats
BNM – 1 seat
BNP (A) – 1 seat
BNP (M) – 1 seat
JWP – 1 seat

These seems perfectly in line with what these parties representation in the Provincial Assemblies...and it's great to see the MMA get more than the PPPP and PML (N) combined. :)
