I guess what the generally accepted definition is? I consider myself generous in certain situations whereas in other situations people close to me point out my behavior as selfish or self centered.

So selfish would be only thinking of yourself and not caring how your actions impact others??
You wouldn't find many people that don't have atleast some degree of selfish in them.
Materilistic would be liking nice things??
Although I don't consider myself highly materialistic, I honestly don't find this to be too wrong or bad. If you can afford and know how to stay within your limits then why not?

Selfish and materialistic means keeping all the good things to yourself and not sending your friends expensive gifts.
