KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Altaf Hussain, who has been living in self-exile in London for several years, questioned the stance of the Supreme Court against lawmakers with dual nationalities and the issue of overseas Pakistanis not being allowed to vote.

“I was born, studied and raised in Pakistan and also acquired dual nationality, will I seize to be less loyal to our soil, where I was born and where my ancestors are buried?” Hussain began his address with the question.

Further questioning the voting rights of dual nationality holders, Hussain asked, “If any political government forces any one out of the country on political grounds and enduring his exile, he is naturalised in any other country, should he not be allowed to contest the elections, knowing fully well the circumstances under which he acquired his new nationality?”

Hussain maintained that those who had left the country were still patriots and their right to vote for the right leader should not be taken away. Similarly, those holding dual nationalities should also not be barred from contesting elections, as it would be highly unfair to the patriots, he remarked.

The party chief also suggested that a referendum should be held of overseas Pakistani asking them whether they still love Pakistan or not

He seems to be paving his own way into the National Assembly. Can we see him back to Pakisan in 2013 as a lawmaker?

Re: Self-exiled Altaf Hussain speaks for dual nationality holders

Why does he have to fear, he is not contesting polls for the past many years and I dont think he will be beck before the next elections. Besides if he wants dual nationals to participate in the elections, why doesn't he force the government to pass a law for that?

Re: Self-exiled Altaf Hussain speaks for dual nationality holders

This simple question doesnt make any sense, it’s result is obvious i.e Yes. Such questions “Would you like to stay or visit Pakistan when Pakistan is at war?” should be asked and people reply being realistic.
Though pakistan is curently at war in a sense. And Altaf should reply this question first.

Re: Self-exiled Altaf Hussain speaks for dual nationality holders

he and his party has created an alternate control structure pretty visible , controlled by the units and sectors in the city , which is pretty dubious
also with a militant cadre of around one lac , thats what he offered to the traders of Karachi a kind of protection blanket to safe them from Other Bhatta khoors , provided they pay for this One lac force of Bhatta khoors as upkeep money ] ...question why has he created a one lac strong force of fully militant militia in the first place .. is he contemplating some kind of war of Independence ..?

so yes in my views his motives are , and honestly speaking in my view his Loyalty to the country is suspectable .

Re: Self-exiled Altaf Hussain speaks for dual nationality holders

This man is super crazy, I seriously question his mental abilities. Khair, point being, he's the last person who should be talking on behalf of the overseas Pakistanis ...

I do not like the decision the OP are being cut off from the political matters of Pakistan, but I also recognize the fact that most of the retards sitting in the Parliament are misusing their dual nationality status and hence this law is very much needed to tackle this issue. Alot of wealth of the Pakistani's is being looted by those in government who are misusing their dual nationality and busy taking this wealth overseas and hiding it .. its not fair on the Pakistani people.

Re: Self-exiled Altaf Hussain speaks for dual nationality holders

Let's see... to acquire his dual nationality, he will have sworn as follows.

"I, Altaf Hussain, do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, her heirs and successors, according to law. So help me God. "

So unlike, say, Nawaz Sharif. Altaf Hussain has sworn an oath that his true allegiance is to the head of state of another country. If he does not honour this oath, how should we expect him to honour whichever oath he swears for office in Pakistan?

In fact, one could even argue that since Queen Elizabeth's legal status in Pakistan was removed by the 1958 constitution, in swearing his true allegiance to her, Altaf Hussain has repudiated his allegiance not just to Pakistan's current constitution, but every single constitution since Pakistan became a republic in 1958.

Re: Self-exiled Altaf Hussain speaks for dual nationality holders

He should take part in his own country's politics — that is Britain.

Re: Self-exiled Altaf Hussain speaks for dual nationality holders

who takes him seriously anyways. the other day, he was saying that my party should remove my pictures from public/private institutations, because he does not want anybody to use these institutions for political activities. now, look whos saying that, hypocrisy at its best. his pictures are found everywhere in Karachi. I have grown up seeing his name and pictures on streets of Karachi. the sooner MQM get rid of him, the better.

Re: Self-exiled Altaf Hussain speaks for dual nationality holders

Altaf Hussain is mixing voters and candidates...
Pakistanis who are living abroad should have right of vote
but person with dual nationality must withdraw from his foreign nationality
