No, ppl around you can be jerks too. Many of us have had relatives or 'friends' who could be anywhere in the range between underhanded 'compliments' to open outright picking at something.

depends from person to person
some bother about appearance,others don't at all,it's the last thing that matters to them.
and then others who have a good sense of observation and try amending themselves,others who have their own style and no matter how annoying it is to you and everyone around..they won't change their appearance for you or others,happy in their own world.
and then,it's true,that someone else telling you about your appearance not being appealing,might have a million things at back of mind,is embarrassed of you being in their friend's circle,maybe a true friend who really wants to help you out and not care what the world thinks about you,yet others who love to give their word on everything/everyone else,free counselling with a big yappy.

i think it may have been true in the past but in present day what ive noticed is pride is at an all time high...ppl fail to realize their short comings
but other people are quick to point them out :p

Well my mom says I am beautiful and pretty and cute and adorable and just purfaact!! 
And that’s all that matters to me.
