What’s with so many secret societies & the conspiracy theories everywhere?

**Hell Fire Club
The Thule Society
and so on.
Why do such societies take birth ? Is it the human need to worship something/someone (be it God,saint,satan ,human etc) ? or to have a feeling of belonging to a brotherhood?
And if they are so secret , then how did media find about them ?
Or are they really secret ? or do they really exist?
