Great news for South Africa.

SA Look For Clean Sweep

South Africa received a boost with the news opening batsman Herschelle Gibbs will play in the second Test against Sri Lanka, starting on Friday at Centurion.

Gibbs was forced to withdraw from the side 30 minutes before the start of the first Test after injuring his back in the warm-up.

But he passed a fitness test on Thursday, paving the way for a swift return.

“I treated Herschelle twice a day on Monday and Tuesday this week in Cape Town,” said South African team physiotherapist Shane Jabaar.

**“He took a full part in training (on Wednesday) and (Thursday’s) fitness test was simply to put his back under a bit of pressure and make sure there was no reaction.” **

Martin van Jaarsveld, who was rushed into the side as Gibbs’ replacement but failed with the bat, is likely to make way.

The hosts are favourites to complete a 2-0 series whitewash after winning by an innings in two-and-a-half days at the Wanderers.

Sri Lanka’s performance there was a hapless one, continuing their poor record away from home.

Sandwiched inbetween innings of just 192 and 130, Sri Lanka conceded 62 extras in a profligate bowling display on a helpful pitch.

To make matters worse, the visitors will be without skipper Sanath Jayasuriya as they attempt to recover lost pride.

Jayasuriya damaged the ligaments in his right ankle during training this week.

Left-hander Jehan Mubarak, who made his Test debut against Bangladesh earlier this year, is expected to come into the side.

Opening batsman Marvan Atapattu will act as stand-in captain.

Atapattu admitted that Jaysuriya’s absence is a huge blow for Sri Lanka.

“It’s a great loss but we have all got to understand that one day we’ll have to play without him,” Atapattu said.

**“When Aravinda de Silva stepped down I said the same thing. No one is here forever.” **

Atapattu, who will lead his country for the first time in Tests, said his players are committed to producing a vastly improved performance.

**"We did so many things wrong in the first Test and we are trying to put them right here.

“We have had discussions and we know where we went wrong and we’ll be trying our utmost to correct that in this match,”** Atapattu said.

Off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan should play, despite suffering from a hernia problem that is expected to keep him out of some or all of the five one-dayers that follow the Tests.

No offense but what excitement?

I feel sorry for the Lankans, they are missing their best bowler Murali and their best batsman Jayasuriya due to injury.

Fine start by Srilanka.

Not convincing, I am sure SA will easily chase that and give a big total to SL. This match could be a draw or SA will win but I doubt SL will be able to win this one.

Anything is possible. But if you talk about who's strong enough, South Africa would be damn right answer!

Pollock Dents Sri Lankan Ambition

**Brilliant batting from Shaun Pollock, mainly in partnership with Mark Boucher, gave the home side a clear advantage with two days to play at SuperSport Park.

Pollock produced an array of drives and pulls to ensure a sizeable lead for the home side after some uncertain batting by the middle order saw them 264-6 at one point. **

Sri Lanka’s star slow bowler Muttiah Muralitharan, meanwhile, had to wait nearly the entire day before claiming a wicket.

But by removing Andrew Hall and Steve Elworthy just before stumps he moved one wicket ahead of Kapil Dev in the all-time list, with 435 victims.

Only Shane Warne and Courtney Walsh have more Test wickets.

On Sunday morning, South Africa lost Herschelle Gibbs and Jacques Kallis after they had put on 140 for the third wicket.

Resuming on 76 overnight, Gibbs moved to within eight runs of an eighth Test century before he was run out following a terrible mix-up with Kallis.

He pushed a Murali delivery wide of the bowler and set off for a run, but slipped as Kallis sent him back and was yards short of his ground.

Hasantha Fernando then returned to the attack to rip out Kallis’s off-stump with the first delivery of a new spell after the batsman had made 84.

Neither Ashwell Prince nor Neil McKenzie looked comfortable and both men fell in the middle session.

Prince edged a pull and was caught behind off Chaminda Vaas for 20, while Chamila Gamage trapped McKenzie plumb in front for 28.

Vaas and Murali were both unlucky at times when they then sought to remove Boucher and Pollock before tea, but the batsmen’s positive approach paid dividends.

The seventh-wicket pair added 132 before Boucher, on 63, chipped an easy return catch for Gamage.

Muralitharan then finally won a couple of decisions to remove Hall and Elworthy quickly, but 10 runs came off the final over of the day, bowled by Dilhara Fernando.

It included a six by Pollock, only the second in the first three days of this Test, as the South African captain ended the day unbeaten on 78.

Murali Fails To Halt South Africa

Muttiah Muralitharan felt he could have had five or six wickets rather than the two he had to settle for on the third day of the second Test against South Africa.

But the Sri Lankan off-spinner still moved to third place on the all-time Test wicket-takers’ list after claiming his 435 victim, one more than Indian legend Kapil Dev.

Muralitharan had to wait until his 50th over before taking his first wicket of the match, trapping Andrew Hall leg before wicket, after conceding 108 runs.

Two overs later he had Steve Elworthy caught at silly mid-off before finishing the day with two for 116 from 53 overs.

“I tried hard. I thought I bowled really well,” said Muralitharan, who added that he had not been affected by the groin injury which will cause him to miss the one-day series.

Muralitharan is now behind only Courtney Walsh of the West Indies (519) and Australia’s Shane Warne (481).

But the Sri Lankan is confident of adding to his tally.

“I’m only 30. I can play for another four or five years,” he said.

It was the 132-run stand for the seventh wicket between Mark Boucher and Shaun Pollock that really damaged Sri Lanka’s prospects on Sunday.

South Africa eventually ended the day with a 98-run lead and with one first-innings wicket in hand.

And Boucher is confident his side can give Sri Lanka more problems in the final two days of the Test.

“The wicket is starting to play up a bit. A couple of balls from Chaminda Vaas misbehaved today,” he said.

**“With our bowlers having a little more pace, it could make it more difficult for their batsmen.” **

Good to see SA kicking SL A$$ too bab Murali could not save SL.

I watched one of Murali interview and he mentioned he wants to take 500+ wickets in tes, I doubt he'll be able to do that.

Well just like India, they are bullies home and pussy cats outside the continent. I can see them have a similiar loosing streak as India couple years from now on.
Murali is useless on these pitches of South Africa, their fast bowlers are below average like India. Their chances in the WC are really low.
Wait till you guys see Shoaib bowl in SA.

In the past Murali has troubled the South Africans in South Africa. I heared that he is carrying a groin injury as well as a problem with some toes, and that's why he will not stay for the ODI's.

He will most certainly become the biggest wicket taker ever - might even go to 750+.

We are looking forward to the Pakistani team. Pity our own bowling arsenal is a little deplete without A Donald.

Just looked at his recored he has 433 wickets so far and the guy is 30 or 31 years old. I guess I am wrong in my above statement that he won't be able take 500 wickets, I guess he might be able to take 500 wickets but 750+ nah thats too much.
