Many of you will know that during the American Civil War there was briefly talk abt the city of NY seceding from the US proper to preserve trade and financial links with the Confederate States as well as the Federal US. The idea died out.
However, given the cities Intl nature and standing as a true global city, it is said that the city is often at odds with Washington over issues such as immigration, visa policy and taxation policy.
There is little doubt that the City State of NY could survive economically free from the Union, and that it would no longer suffer the consequences for decisions made by Texans in the White House.
Now I am not a NY resident, never have been, but as a one time resident of London, I am interested in what NY residents would make of the idea of living in an independent City State called NY.
If a referendum was ever held, who would support it?
Just some stats, annually the city of NY sends more $11.4bn in taxes to the federal govt then it receives, and an additonal $11bn to the state of NY.

You have totally misunderstood Sara. I am not surprised. As of now, NY is a state within the American Federation or Union of States. It is proposed that NYC (and state if you want, our interest is in the city alone) break away from the US and form its own state (as in country) free from association from the Federal US.

I dont know. But it raises an interesting point. London is a "state within a state" according to the Guardian, and a "blackhole that sucks in resources" from the rest of the nation.
Should Alpha global cities become independant city states freeing themselves of the political baggage associated with the governments that rule the territory they are situated in.

I am aware that DC would never let it happen, whatever degree of popularity the idea was to gain. It was meant to be a discussion of the merits of the idea.
