...Search Toolbar...

My antivirus expired and guess what? The first thing that happens is that some search toolbar installs itself on the computer :smack: The one where there are buttons for games, gambling, news, weather, adults etc. SO I reinstalled macafee but it didn’t detect the virus (search toolbar). Lavasoft Adaware also didn’t detect anything. It is not listed in add/remove either. I went ahead, found the files in registry and manually deleted them but it still pops up with every explorer window.

You know how with imesh bar and others, you can right click on the bar and check off the bars that you don’t need to display, but with this, all those options are grayed out. When I right click on the bar to check it off, it shows me the list and it’s there, but I can’t click it because it’s grayed out.

What catagory does it fall under? Trojon? Virus? Worm? Any programs to delete the stupid thing :help:

Re: ...Search Toolbar...

prolly a browser hijack. First things first. Get an anti-virus thats not expired. Then run a scan. Then try ad-aware, then spybot. If it still doesnt go away, run hijackthis and report to duty here in this thread with the log.

Re: ...Search Toolbar...

Yes, I installed the newer Macafee, still didn't detect it.
Adaware didn't detect it either.
Haven't tried spybot, will try it when I get home.
Haven't tried hijackthis and will do this when I get home.

Thankoo 5abi pay : >

Re: ...Search Toolbar...

try microsoft anti spyware as well

Re: ...Search Toolbar...

Is it PBIS toolbar?

If it is, man, thats a hard one to get rid of. I had to do a system restore for a few days back, ran three different anti-spyware (including MS).. all of them detected it, one of them (MS) claimed it removed it, but still it will keep on trying to install itself (MS, again, kept warning me, and I had to keep on saying 'no, no no'). This happened for about 3 days, before one of the anti-spyware up'd the definitions and got rid of it completely.

Re: ...Search Toolbar...

It's this stupid thing. Notcie how the menu buttons are grayed out. If you click on "Remove toolbar", it won't remove it. Instead, it'll take to you to a random promotion site.

Spybot didn't remove it.
Microsoft Anti Spyware didn't remove it
Macafee didn't remove it.
Adware didn't remove it.

I guess now I have to run hijackthis.

Re: …Search Toolbar…

Thanks Umar bhai. I ran the MS Anti spyware for the second time and this time it caught all that junk and removed it. I guess it needed to update the definitions. I looked at your post and it’s pretty handy and I’ll keep it in mind if I ever need it again. I did have a perfetch folder and I have removed it. There’s still so much junk in registry but I don’t want to fool around with that as I locked myself out of windows by deleting some registeries last time and I had to reinstall windows

But thanks for the post and thanks all for your suggestions :k:
