Re: Screen Capture Softwares

Re: Screen Capture Softwares
snagit vs snipping tool
which one to pick ?
Re: Screen Capture Softwares
Snipping tool comes preinstalled with windows 7 and 8. It only has tools such as pen, highlight and an eraser, pretty basic. Lets you save in HTML, GIF, PNG and JPEG format.
Greenshot, installed it just now to compare it with the other 2 programs. Its free and i installed the full version instead of choosing default or custom because then it installs all the plugins so that you can open it in MS office, paint, upload it to dropbox, picassa, photo bucket etc. It comes with its own editor. More tools than ST, so you can add text, insert lines, highlight, rotate, resize and use effects such as color inversion, border, greyscale, pixelate and a few more and thats pretty much it. Lets you save in multiple formats.
Snagit, you can download the free trial version for 15 days and if you decide that you want it, then you can purchase it. It has all the features of GS and much more. It has its own editor and the tools and image effects have many options. One thing that i like about it is that unlike GS, i can select an area within the image and make changes to that portion only without disturbing the rest of the image, eg. instead of rotating/ flipping the whole image i select my desired part and rotate that potion only. You can also watermark the images and it also captures video and audio as well. You can save your work in multiple formats.
I’ve attached screenshots of all 3 programs, just so you can have an idea how it looks and what can you do with each program. Which one you choose, depends on what tools you require to edit an image after capturing it ![]()

Thanks for the detailed review. I just checked snipping tool is installed on my laptop, i was not aware of it at all lol. The good thing is that image can be edited right after capturing in the same editor, two in one. I always used two softwares in the past for capturing and editing. I thought snagit is free all the way?
Greenshot looks good and it gives you the opportunity of opening the image in many other softwares. i wonder if anyone else is using it too?
Re: Screen Capture Softwares
For mac people, its Command+shift+4

No problem, glad i could help. I did not mention it earlier, but there is another way you can download snagit for free....yes download via torrent (i'm not getting into the ethical perspective of it 'coz i neither condone it nor condemn it....up to the individual). Since i've just installed Greenshot to review it for you, haven't used it much but whatever i've used of it was pretty decent, as i said if you want more editing options go for snagit. Btw all 3 are super easy to use.
On a similar note, i discovered nearly a week back that microsoft also comes preinstalled with a speech to text converter, called Windows speech recognition. I had to type so many essays, i just got tired of typing so i googled for a program and i find out that it was there all the time (its ok, Dragon naturally speaking is much better).
Re: Screen Capture Softwares
though it captures the full screen, and you may need to crop, but Function + Prnt Screen option is the best screen capture command

Yeah I will use torrent and who does't like free things even gained illegally? I do. :p
I have used Windows speech recognition on Google but already knew there would be some software for the above you mentioned, really good for people who have to do a lot of typing.

Asked about the software that does the actual job, no need to give any external commands.
The above commands take longer, you have to capture the screen shot then save it in some program , edit it , crop it etc so time consuming. It is better to use a software that does all for you sometimes all in one go. There is no need of cropping an image because of the way image can be captured with the specific software.

This is what I get when clicking on the link:
Error establishing a database connection
Re: Screen Capture Softwares
talking about windows hidden tools, here is one. I was trying to make a how to document with steps and screen shots and came across this gem of a tool.
Problem Steps Recorder
If remote assistance is not enough, you can use Windows’ problem steps recorder. This tool records everything you do, and creates an MHT file complete with screenshots (even of multiple monitors) and a description of every step you made. You can also add comments to every step. To run it, type “psr” in Windows search
Some more tools and reading:
