Anyone try making scones yet? I tried a recipe and followed all the steps, but they came out with the texture of a cracker biscuit, not the soft chewy cookie feel that the type Starbucks has.

sounds like a case of near-zero leavening.

did you cut in the butter cold, and not at room temp? did you stir it all together with ice cold water/milk? did you remember not to over-mix?

you want your scone/biscuit to go into the oven with the dough having lots and lots of lumps of butter that havent been all mixed in all smooth and uniform. this is what separates the dough into flaky goodness as it bakes. else you get a hard lump.

yummmmm Panera has the BEST melt-in-the-mouth scones, wish i could get my hands on their recipe. (sorry i'm no help, just craving scones now)

there are hardly any good scones in USA, Panera and Starbucks scones suck.

I cant compare obviously as never had scone outside USA, but Starbucks Almond scone is really good.

Nobody can beat good ol’ british scones, with slatherings of cream, a dollop of jam, and decent brew for afternoon tea. :snooty:

maroush post a pic of triangular oversized crumbly dry monstrosity eaten without cream and jam, thats what is called a scone in USA.

and if u cant get good tattie scones here, try some of the latkes at polish or other eastern european joints, i bet u will like them.
