THE EXPANSION OF THE UNIVERSE

The expansion of the Universe is one of the most imposing discoveries of modern science. Today it is a firmly established concept and the only debate centers around the way this is taking place.
It was first suggested by the general theory of relativity and is backed up by physics in the examination of the galactic spectrum; the regular movement towards the red section of their spectrum may be explained by the distancing of one galaxy from another. Thus the size of the Universe is probably constantly increasing and this increase will become bigger the further away the galaxies are from us. The speeds at which these celestial bodies are moving may, in the course of this perpetual expansion, go from fractions of the speed of light to speeds faster than this.

The following verse of the Qur’an (sura 51, verse 47) where God is speaking, may perhaps be compared with modern ideas:

“The heaven, We have built it with power. Verily. We are expanding it.” ‘Heaven’ is the translation of the word sama’ and this is exactly the extra-terrestrial world that is meant. ‘We are expanding it’ is the translation of the plural present participle musi’una of the verb ausa’a meaning ‘to make wider, more spacious, to extend, to expand’.

Some translators who were unable to grasp the meaning of the latter provide translations that appear to me to be mistaken, e.g. “we give generously” (R. Blachere). Others sense the meaning, but are afraid to commit themselves: Ramidullah in his translation of the Qur’an talks of the widening of the heavens and space, but he includes a question mark. Finally, there are those who arm themselves with authorized scientific opinion in their commentaries and give the meaning stated here. This is true in the case of the Muntakab, a book of commentaries edited by the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Cairo. It refers to the expansion of the Universe in totally unambiguous terms.

What doesn’t make sense to me is that, why do non-believers still deny the Truth? I would like comments from non-muslims about what I just posted.

Disbelievers still won’t believe. Shame on them.

I was thinking of opening this thead. Thank you brother shakir, I will post much more stuff about this issue later.

Where are my hindu friends? I ask you to keep an eye on this thread. We shall learn allot from this one. Hope you are ready to face the truth.

"It was like old news to the world, but for Jamsheedd it was the most glorifying moment of his life and his believes when he read it. Secretly they have been telling this to other people for centuries. “From the first day when the sun first rose on this earth, it brought life to this barren place”. It was Nicholas Copernicus, who told, rather explained to the world that the earth was revolving around the mighty SUN. For Copernicus it was a scientific discovery, for the christen faith, it was losing its center. For Jamsheedd, Zarathoshtra was the greatest man ever to walk the face of the earth, with the blessing of Ahura Mazda. They worshiped the sun for thousands of years, and now Copernicus have proven them right.

Tahir, a renowned scholar, was explaining to his audience. “"The heaven, we have built it with power. Verily we are expanding it." Reciting the verse from Quran, “we knew this 1400 hundreds years ago, they (Western scientists) are telling this to us now.” In other words Steven Hawkins and the Hubbell telescope have proven the 1400 year old theory right.

At the same time on another part of the world Aman-ul-allah was arguing with his friends. Saying “ See this plate” gripping the small saucer in his hand firmly, “this is the moon, above our head, it’s not falling down. You know why?”. Asking his friends. “Because there is a firm grip holding it. And whose grip is strong and big enough to hold the moon?” He asked his friends. Amid murmuring they answer, Allah-hu-Akber (Allah is great). Amanullah then says ‘the force holding it up is greater than the force pushing it down.” And tells his friends “Iblees (evil) wants the moon to fall on us, and this Isaac Newton, what ever his name is, is working for Iblees.”

Sammir Chaterji, a Physics professor in a university in west Bangal, was explaining the Big Bang theory to his students. Saying “The Gyana (reasoning) of Hinduism have, for thousands of years explained the Hiranyagarbha (the olden egg) concepts to us, to them (Carl Segan and his team of scientist) its a discovery.” For the students, it was the affirmation of there believes.

Every religion now is proving it self right, with the help of the new enlightenment. Its not far away when doctors in Vermont will reveal that they have impregnated a woman with just swallowing air. Bible and Quaranic verses will prove them self right once more. For each scientific enlightenment, which is result of millions of years of evolution of human brain, there is some god, who had already discovered it before its time. If the gods where so intelligent, why it didn’t enlighten his prophets then, Or may be his prophets were not that intelligent. Or else, both. But why in this age all the religions are being proven right by the scientific enlightenment.

It’s not right or wrong
Its different ...and
Different is hard to admit.

To MiniMe:
That's not true. Not all religions are proving to be scientifically correct. For instance, in the Bible there are certain verses that are scientifically incorrect. These verses were obviously fabricated centuries ago by so called "men of knowledge". Today there are many versions of the Bible and the scary thing is that they contradict each othere on many points. Facts that seemed correct centuries ago, and are in the Bible, turned out to be incorrect as science and technology progressed. This is understandable because we as Muslims know that the Bible is corrupt and unfortunately the true essence of it does not exist.
MiniMe, if you can show me how other religions are proved by science, I would be obliged.
Peace.

By asking why nonbelievers refuse to acknowledge the truth, I assume you’re asking why people don’t convert to islam.

Well in a nutshell, two reasons: Ignorance and Fear.

Okay first of all ignorance, this can be described in two ways, first is that many people don’t know about islam at all and so of course its obviously understandable why they do not accept islam. But also beneath ignorance we can place the category of ppl, who know about islam…or well, at least they think they know about islam, but what they know is not really islam, rather their knowledge is based on stereotypes, misconceptions, and the like…and that afterall is admittedly fueled by ignorance and misinformation.

Fear. Its a four letter word.

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/rolleyes.gif

No really i’m not kidding it is

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/wink.gif

smiles
Alright seriously, i think we can all admit that fear is one the greatest motivators or ‘unmotivators’(for lack of a better word). I mean how much of our behaviour, our attitude, our thoughts, our actions are governed by fear. Fear of ridicule, fear of rejection, fear of insecurity, fear of wry smile i could go on. But i guess just put yourself in someone else’s shoes for a minute, think about them contemplating a conversion to islam, or for that matter, just think of yourself, seriously considering leaving your own religion, its not very easy is it? Think about your family, your friends, your job, your life as it is now, your life as it would be if if you decided to embrace another religion, i mean wouldn’t it almost feel as if you were stepping off the edge of a cliff…
I mean sure u’d have your religion, but i mean, those other things are important too, and i can understand someone being fearful of losing them, because afterall they do pretty much make up your whole world. You have to have alot of courage and alot of strength.

Shakir, people may be able to acknowledge, and admit that islam rings true. But alot of them cannot, will not, or do not come to islam, because they are afraid. And, you have to be able to recognize that. And u should be able to recognize that embracing a new religion, a foreign way of life is not always so easy.

GFQ, very true. Also...I think arrogance is a big factor.

Before we go on to describe why non-believers dont believe in the Quran, I think its more imperative that we figure out why 'believers' dont believe in the Quran. Yes, that means us Muslims. Im my mind, a person can be called a believer not merely by saying "Laa Ilaha Illa Allah". There are a lot of post conditions attached to this kalima, which mean following each and everything thats been laid down in the Quran. Yes, there is no such thing as a perfect human, and yes, we cannot attain the religious stature that the Prophets and sahaba attained, but we can try. We can at least have the intentions to, cause thats what Allah SWT looks for in us....a pure intention. Honestly speaking, how many muslims of this day can say that they are willing to abide by, or willing to try and abide by all the rulings that Allah SWT has laid out in the Holy Quran? Frankly speaking, not many. And doesnt that make us worse off than a non-believer? Because, we are pretending to believe in something, and not really doing it. The non-believers dont believe in it, and are saying so out loud.....difference between hypocrisy and realism.

PS. Do we really need the support of science to prove the authenticity of the Holy Quran?

The main reason that the prophets would not have tried to explain this to the people of their times is
- try explaining general theory of relativity to them.. would they be able to grasp the concept... well for that matter.. how many of people reading this understand the theory.

It takes knowledge to filter through to the masses..

In hundred years from now everyone student would understand general Theory of Relativity.. as well as many other theories which if it is explained today.. people will lynch the speaker claiming heresey.

Anyways... with regard to another post.. one thing or another in every religious book may be proved at one time or another.. but that does not mean that the whole book is correct.. there are things in jewish Torah which we agree to.. but not to the whole book.. there are things in Bible we agree to but to the whole book.. as was rightly stated that there are many discrepencies.

It has to be realised with the matter or the bible is that it is not the 'injeel' as referred to in Quran.. It is at best sunnah of I'sa ... therefore discrepencies which we encounter in hadith as well.. so cool down on that fact.

who knows.. in time we might get to understand how the miracles of I'sa were carried out..

From what we see in this universe.. God has set the laws and everything is done by them.. even divine intervention is by them.. but of course we are just finding out about these laws..

laws of gravity, general theory of relativity are cogs of the wheel which would lead to that understanding.. but of course there is no guarantee that humanity will survive that long..

One book i would recommend all people to read is Stephen Hawkings 'Brief History of Time'.. from it you will get some grasp of how the scientist have come to the conclusion of Big Bang, expanding Universe etc..

One thing in the book which really moved me was this (not exactly as in the book but the gist of it is still here)
'for the universe to be as it is today the starting conditions before the Big Bang have to be set so precisely to ensure the Universe comes out the way it did, to allow a creation of a galaxy and stars and a planet which would have biological life which could look up in the sky and question how it was done..'

Anyways i will close my post with two things..
1. would electricity, air travel, automatic doors (ali Baba) seem like magic to people a few hundred years ago.. and if yes, try the same thing 1400 years ago.

  1. my recent favourite Phrase.. which somewhat suits this post is 'Any technology distinguishible from magic is insufficiently advanced'

Ciao

"Fame is the accumulation of misunderstandings around a well known name"

Of all the acclaimed masterpieces that the world has seen, nothing can be compared to the book known as the Qur’an. Millions have become Muslims upon simply hearing a verse from this amazing book, yet still the majority knows nothing of it. The Qur’an is the Final Revelation from the Creator to humanity. It was revealed in the year 610 CE to the Prophet Muhammed (saws), and completed over a period of 23 years. These 23 years of revelation resulted in a book which comprised of 114 chapters and over 6000 verses. All of this was to become the primary source of law for the whole of mankind to live and die by.

The impact of this book is such that Allah says :

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/smile.gif

“Had We[1] revealed this Qur’an upon a mountain, surely you would have seen it humble itself and crumble out of the fear of Allah. Such are the parables We put forward to mankind so that they may reflect”

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/smile.gif

(Surah Al-Hashr 59:21)

However, it seems as if the hearts of the people have become harder then the mountains which tower above us. When the Qur’an is recited or even mentioned, people turn away with disgust. In the West, this is primarily due to the negative exposure from the media. It has resulted in many non-Muslims not even wanting to hear the name of this amazing book. Muslims too, have become hardhearted because of the cultural influences of the West. Many young Muslims perceive the Qur’an to be nothing more then an old wrapped up book, which comes off the highest shelf once a year during Ramadan!
If people were to truly reflect upon this book, they would realise that nothing in this world is quite the same. So why should this claim be accepted over others? Why should the Qur’an be given precedence over the likes of the Bible, the Gita[2] or the Granth Sahib[3] ? The following reasons will inshallah give an indication as to why this book deserves the attention of all humanity.

“There is probably in the world no other book which has remained twelve centuries with so pure a text”. Writing 200 years ago, these are the words of the famous English critic of Islam, Sir William Muir. But as Muslims we do not need Williarn Muir to tell us this. 1400 years ago, the Muslims accepted this reality when Allah revealed to them:

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/smile.gif

***“Indeed it is We who have sent down the reminder (the Qur’an), and indeed it is Us who shall preserve it” ***

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/smile.gif

(Surah Al-Hijr 15:9)

These words have proved true to this very day. From the moment the first words were revealed to Muhammed (saws), to this very day, every single letter and word of the Qur’an has remained unchanged.
Before Islam, all the revelations sent were not given this divine assurance. This is why we find that books like the Bible are riddled with corruption and inaccuracies. It is well known that man has tampered with the Bible to the extent that annually different versions are produced to suit trends and desires[4]. In fact this has been going on for so long that it is almost impossible to see what of the words of the Creator are left, if any!

With the Qur’an it is the exact opposite. The contents of this amazing book are stored in the hearts of millions of Muslims worldwide. Children as young as 12 have memorised the entire book in its original language, Arabic. There is no other religious scripture on earth which is orally preserved in its original language by so many and over such a period of time, without having been tampered somewhere along the line. The Bible is a prime example of this. Many Christians believe that English is the divine language of the Bible. However Jesus (as) spoke Aramaic. From Aramaic, his life-story was translated into Hebrew. From Hebrew it was translated into Greek. From Greek to Latin, and then finally from Latin to English! There has not been a single vicar, priest or layman in recorded history who has even memorised the Bible in English, let alone the Aramaic! As Muslims we believe the Qur’an can only be in the language it was revealed in, i.e. Arabic. Anything else is a translation and not the divine words of the Creator. A true test of this divine preservation would be to burn all the books and manuscripts in existence, to see which can return as it was. The Qur’an would be the only book which would return in its original form, letter for letter, word for word.
Many Christians say that the Qur’anic claim of preservation needs to be backed-up by manuscript evidence. For us this is not a necessary criteria, but in order to quell the doubts, the Muslims have ample proof. Two copies of the Qur’an are in existence which date back to the Third Caliph Uthmaan (ra), 20 years after the death of the Prophet (saws). These two copies are to be found in the Topkapi museum, Istanbul, Turkey and in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The Tashkent copy is thought to have been the personal copy of the Caliph as it still contains stains of his blood, which was shed when he was murdered whilst reading it. Any copy of the Qur’an which is compared to these copies, will show that there is not a single difference between what we have today and what was in existence 1400 years ago. Thus Allah’s promise holds true.

Footnotes:
1 The word ‘WE’ does not mean that there is more then one God. Rather it is a plural of respect which gives Allah grandeur over his creation.
2 The Baghyad Gita is one of the Hindu scriptures.
3 The Guru Granth Sahib is the Sikh scripture
4 The most recent version of the Bible is the ‘Politically Correct Version’!!

V~V~VHe came, He saw, He conqueredV~V~V**

Kings and Queen used to call themselves "WE" as an way of showing thier command and thier power!!
when a single person calls themselves we it mean that they think they are above the rest!!

ALLAH IS ABOVE THE REST!!

Ok, as far as science in the Holy Quran is concerned, the Quran is the ONLY book that encourages its reader to disprove it. I recently came across an excellent article on this topic and thought i’d share an exerpt from it:

"A truly scientific approach to the Qur’an is possible because the Qur’an offers something that is not offered by other religious scriptures, in particular, and other religions, in general. It is what scientists demand. Today there are many people who have ideas and theories about how the universe works. These people are all over the place, but the scientific community does not even bother to listen to them. This is because within the last century the scientific community has demanded a test of falsification. They say, “If you have theory, do not bother us with it unless you bring with that theory a way for us to prove whether you are wrong or not.”

Such a test was exactly why the scientific community listened to Einstein towards the beginning of the century. He came with a new theory and said, “I believe the universe works like this; and here are three ways to prove whether I am wrong!”. So the scientific community subjected his theory to the tests, and within six years it passed all three. Of course, this does not prove that he was great, but it proves that he deserved to be listened to because he said, “This is my idea; and if you want to try to prove me wrong, do this or try that.” This is exactly what the Qur’an has - falsification tests. Some are old (in that they have already been proven true), and some still exist today. Basically it states, “If this book is not what it claims to be, then all you have to do is this or this or this to prove that it is false.” Of course, in 1400 years no one has been able to do "This or this or this, " and thus it is still considered true and authentic. I suggest to you that the next time you get into dispute with someone about Islam and he claims that he has the truth and that you are in darkness, you leave all other arguments at first and make this suggestion. Ask him, “Is there any falsification test in your religion? Is there anything in your religion that would prove you are wrong if I could prove to you that it exists - anything?” Well, I can promise right now that people will not have anything - no test, no proof, nothing! This is because they do not carry around the idea that they should not only present what they believe but should also offer others a chance to prove they’re wrong. However, Islam does that. A perfect example of how Islam provides man with a chance to verify it authenticity and “prove it wrong” occurs in the 4th chapter. And quiet honestly, I was surprised when I first discovered this challenge. It states:

“Do they not consider the Qur’an? Had it been from any other than Allah, they would surely have found therein much discrepancy.”

This article is long but really good, so if any of you want to take time to read it or print it, here’s the link:

The expansion of the universe is but just one example from the Quran!! The Quran has proven alot of scientific facts!! it describes in detail how a child is born in a mother’s womb…
It tells us about ‘mountain masses of clouds’! Clouds look like mountains from an airplane.
It talks about many things which are proven by science just this century.. Others are still waiting to be proved!

The non-believers are plain ignorant!!

go to http://islam.org/Science/ISLAMSCI.HTM
The websites in the link cover all the scientific facts and proofs in Quran.

Also go to http://islamicity.com/Video/irf1.ram to watch a really good video about “Islam & Science” by Dr.Zakir Naik.

Any religion that claims they have a basis in Science is completely false.

All religions have done many things to try to prove itself by trying to twist it's own translations to somehow fit the adequate requirements of becoming scientific fact.

They will try to find similarities, translate one word, re-translate it again, and then translate it again, until it fits what they want.

For example

what is the meaning of 'computer'
a computer is a logical device that is used for computational purposes and calculations
from here you might say
what is the meaning of calculations
calculations is the study of logically deriving expressions, forms and theorems
then you might say
what is the meaning of theorems
.. etc.. Religion will keep on continuing this cycle until it has reached what it's looking for. Judaism does this alot in specific. And the Q'uran and other books are no exception. And even Muslims say it self, noone can read the Q'uran better than it's Arabic form, reading it in it's literal form provides no examples of science, until it's translated and then manipulated. If God wanted you to know all these scientific wonders in your books, I'm sure he would have just thrown in the pythogorean theorem for fun and maybe a few integration techniques.

All these books from all religions, are made for worship, prayer and lifestyle. They were not designed to teach you how to do certain things. What people have done only is, for their own sake of fullfillment to try to prove things they were never meant to prove to somehow say the hard work of Scientists is pointless because "hey, it's all there sitting in the holy book!".

Arai

Here's an interesting and simple thought for everyone.

If in Christianity, it is said that the universe is not more than 10,000 years old when God created it. (Now, considering that Islam and Christianity shares the same principles on the old testament, of the origins of the Universe, adam and eve etc.)

How come, we can prove that life existed over 250 million years ago? In forms of bacteria, and micro and nanoorganisms? Isn't it that God created Adam and Eve as the first living beings on Earth? When Science can adequately prove that Humans never surfaced the earth over 100 million years later?

Arai
