Schumacher announces retirement

[after zidane, my other favourite sportsman stops this year :o ]

After the victory at Monza this afternoon, Schumacher has confirmed his retirement after this year.

At the moment he is only two points behind Alonso and if he takes the crown it will be his record 8th.

Undoubtedly he is the best driver of all times. He has so many records in the sport that it might be a record in itself.

Just a list of his credentials:

  • record 7 World Titles
  • record 90 victories (number two has only 51)
  • record number of points
  • record number of pole positions
  • record number of fastest laps
  • record number of points in one season
  • record number of victories in one season
  • joint record of world titles in a row
  • record number of podium finishes
    etc
    etc

Re: Schumacher announces retirement

Schumacher was my favourite driver. Sad day for the sports. He was undoubtedly the greatest driver of all times as Nescio has said above.

Simply A genius at Play.

Re: Schumacher announces retirement

apparently there are only three major records in Formula 1 that Schumi does not hold:

-youngest ever world champion. He did hold it, until Alonso took over last year
- most consecutive GP victories. Schumi has 7, Ascari managed 9
- last record, I don't remember

Other records he does hold are:
- most victories on a single track: 7 times he won GP of France
- finishing every race in the season on the podium: 2003

Re: Schumacher announces retirement

though I admired him as a driver - he was and is in total control of his car - I never appreciated his child like aggresiveness and stooping to levels which do not dignify the great sportsman he is..

Re: Schumacher announces retirement

Watchout for Robert Kubica!

Re: Schumacher announces retirement

Why this thread has to be a 'sticky'?

Re: Schumacher announces retirement

Schumacher drove an eventful last race to finish 4th and remain 2nd in the driver's title

Re: Schumacher announces retirement

cheap tactics leave a bad taste. I recall when he rammed his car into Damon hill’s car so niether of them finished and he won that way, reminded me of similar stunts pulled by senna, who was my fav driver but again his cheap tactics always disappointed me.

The thing with this era was that schumacher did not have any real long term rivalries, I mean nothing like senna-prost. so he won a lot, but I think the quality of competition was not there.
