For a scholorship to study outside Pakistan ( post graduate research) how can i go about
thanks
are u planning to do phd or post doc?
also mentioning the research field you are interested in would help.
Depends on what ur palnning to do.. in Pak graduate recenntly meant 2 years study after Intermediate.. and master 4 years.. but in USA bachelors is 4 yrs and master 6 after that period.. funding has been reduced sharpely with budget cuts.. still I have seen one can get funding in subjects like Physics, Chemistry, History etc than engineering and CS.
^graduate=masters. in pak the latter term is more commonly used.
and in pak uni's offer 4 yr. bachelor's program, depending on the program itself.
After doing the MBA from recognized university in Pakistan ..is there a chance to get admission in Phd program ..(scholorship) or if possible what are the research prospects..thanks
plz mention what kind of test scores GMAT etc are needed after MBA
I think "Scholarships" would be hard to come by for you. But try....
sarinha
it depends which university you got your mba at and which university you are going to. someone i know who got his mba from IBA had to redo it at Syracuse. I think the number of years for bachelors degree and all make it an issue.
as far as GMAT scores go, they are only one component for admission. how you perfromed in MBA especially in the area you want to go for PhD, experience, research, references, quality of the program you were at, quality of the school you are going to all factor in.
I would say 700 or so puts you in a decent range.
kioon jee Chalta hai????
Thanks Fraudia
i guess i will check up with my university for that :(
Sarinha: I was mistaken you should apply for a schoolerchip at Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Princeton, Duke...infact anywhere they have scholor-ships. You should deinitely go for the skolorsheep.
its always worth a try. i would encourage u to try and contact the
professors directly. u will have to do some search on this and find out
the professors who will be interested in your work. this way u will get an idea of the uni's u should apply at.
good luck!
b/w lums would be a good choice for mba. i believe they have some sort of a program with mcgill uni.

CH do you like walking around with your "better then thou" attitude? or is that just a pass on from problems in your non gupshup life?
Sarinha: if you go for a PhD you will get funded for it otherwise most schools will not accept you. The program depending on your background may take anywhere from 3 to 7 years normally.
For an MBA you would need to be in the top 5% of your class, greater then 700 on GMATs and at least 3-5 yrs of solid experience to get a chance at a scholarships in the top schools (though CH assures me that after Bush anythings possible at Harvard :)).
If you are definately going to get an MBA i would suggest getting work experience in a multinational in pakistan. Also look at the top 30 schools and not just the top 10. They may not have the reputation but they teach the same materials and just as well. The only difference is you have to do a lot more work yourself to get jobs afterwards.
Hope that helps.
On the contrary HMCQ, I would not want the kids to have false expectations as many of you lay out for them. I have advised many, in fact set up a program at a NGO in NYC for south asian kids around college admissions, based on realistic possiblities intune with their capabilities.
I have seen advice given to Irem about going to MIT, without understanding what it takes and even understanding what her capabilities are. That kind of foolishness leads more to destroyed confidence than my blunt remarks.
If you need help advising properly, let me know.
Sarinha Bro/Sis,
You can apply for either a PHD or a Masters [MS/MA] or a bachelors/undergraduate [BS/BA] degree from abroad.
I think you asked abt either masters or phd?
yes you can get funded for both programs if u r good and well qualified. this includes ur grades and ur gre/gmat etc scores [whichever applies to u] and work experience and other achievements…i’ve heard getting into a phd directly is tougher than masters…but phd makes it easier for u to be funded than masters…
the system i am with familiar is: u don’t get scholarships for that: u have to apply for a research assitantship or a teaching assistantship in that college where u get in…it can be done even after ur admission is secured…
browse the websites of various colleges to check out their requirements and the application process…if u have questions u can come and ask her or even better email the email addresses they have provided on their websites…
good luck :k:
lol. mera naam beech mein kahan se aa gya ![]()
don’t worry CH ji, i do know what it takes to get into MIT so in my case if i don’t get in it won’t lead to any destroyed confidence
I’m not applying there right now anyway…
i think anyone applying to top colleges knows how tough it is to get in…and imho hmcq’s advice on this board is generally good…

CH you are always welcome to contribute and advise here since you have the college and work experience. I have always stated that to you on and off the C&A forum. At the same time I have suggested you take out the oneliners- I am not sure if you use them or not with your NGO work but I presume they are not really helpful to the people who are been advised (they wouldnt be to me) and may be you use them to show off your better wit/smarts (or perhaps thats just what I see when I read them). This is not meant to be rude but I am giving you my presepective on your views just as you have shared yours on mine.
When I give advice, it is based on what I have read about the persons abilities and their desire to achieve their goals as I see it in their post. If I know them in person or through other means then I would add my veiws based on that. As far as suggesting people can make it to the top schools, my experience has been that a lot of people can make it if they try hard enough and not knowing them more then on these boards I am not going to discourage them from that. If they provide information to fit a different view (say GMATs 500, no work experience, etc) I will not suggest they go to the top school but select one more in line with where they can be accepted. If I was advising a person one on one I would have a lot more interaction with them then I do here.
For the second part of your comment I am not sure what to say. Your comments are not necessarily blunt, they are just plain unhelpful. If you were blunt stating something I would be fine with it as long as you had considered all sides of the equations (and assuming you give it the same way to the students in the NGO when they come to you for advice). If you have issues with what is suggested here you are more then welcome to open a new thread and discuss them.
Cheers.
Hmcq
