Just tell your girl friends to talk to him and don't criticize him about his lack of confidence... pretend he's a regular guy who has no problem talking to females and he'll eventually start getting good at it.

Well the other day at uni I was at the cafe getting something to eat with this *shareef *guy. Anyways, this hot blond chick I knew from class came by and we all sat down and ate lunch together. So I introduced him to her because it was the right thing to do and the *shareef *guy couldn't even look at her while he tried to talk to her.
Now its not just with blond girls. Its with all girls. This *shareef *bloke talks normal around the guys and is really cheerful person. But when it comes to the ladies he becomes a retard.

I knew same kind of guy, who is my friend. He used to freak out in front of girls, used to take me as moral support. He use to act without confidence and do things which he shouldnt :)
few years down the line.... he was completely transformed to a proper "player" at that stage he never wanted to see me :) all i can tell his transformation was a result of girl betraying him. since that every girl he made girl friend was without commitment.
so if your friend is shy, he needs to interact with girls more. otherwise it will stay the same.

Well how about u and ur friend go somewhere to eat and sit together with girls (hopefully U know them- otherwise it'd be really awkward for him) And try to have a mix conversation. Give him tips like how to talk to a girl.
talk about different stuff, and what things she and him might have in common, --talk about the world news, (michael jackson or sumthing) talk about career, future plans, where they would llike to visit- any vacation plans, family- food, etc etc i mean just a normal one on one conversation. but make sure ur there so he has some confidence with you being there. and let him know if theres anything he might mess up on- then UR there to back him up :)
