Supreme Court strikes down NRO

Supreme Court of Pakistan declares NRO null and void

Zardari as president has immunity but there is something called moral conscience and integrity which he has lost after this unanimous verdict by all 17 judges of the Supreme court

Now cases will be reopened against everyone except Zardari although his immunity can still be challenged in the apex court on the grounds that because of his tainted past and controversial character, he was not eligible to stand for the highest office in the land in the first place.

Not only him but all those corrupt and chor government ministers incl. Ch. Mukhtar, Maulvi Babar Awan and Rehman Malik who benefitted from NRO should be forced to resign

But I know that we are a nation of hut dharam and* dheet* people…ab seedhi ungliyon sey ghee nikalney wala nahin. Hence not expecting miracles anytime soon

DAWN.COM | Pakistan | Supreme Court declares NRO null and void

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has declared the controversial National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) null and void in a short order.

In a landmark decision, the apex court unanimously decided that the ordinance was unconstitutional.

All old cases that had been dismissed under the NRO stand revived and can now be reopened as per the court orders.

The court said that all orders that were passed and all acquittals under the NRO were illegal and never existed.

The apex court in its order also said that all convictions that were held prior to the enactment of the NRO stand revived as well.

Letters made to Swiss courts requesting the withdrawal of cases were also declared unconstitutional.

The Supreme Court asked the government to take action against the former attorney general for making these requests.

Presidential Spokesperson Farhatullah Babar called the verdict ‘shocking’ but said that the government will respect the courts decision.

Babar, however, pointed out that the president and the provincial governors enjoyed immunity from legal proceedings under the constitution.

Re: SC verdict expected in petitions against NRO

O balley balley....

Whats next? Can we actually prosecute the criminals who were pardoned by NRO? What about criminals who were not covered by NRO (likes of Mushy)?

Can mods now please change the thread title to:

'Supreme Court strikes down NRO' etc. :)

Re: SC verdict expected in petitions against NRO

Creating all mess all around, let them finish the tenure!
No one is saint, sab hi nangay hain is hammam main! One goes another comes!

Its good only when have some better alternate for those key-seats!

^ A very weak argument I dare say and one that has brought our nation to it's knees

A collective ghaban of around Rs. 150 billion by NRO criminals is not a small matter. maybe it is for you. And who is saying there should not be ehtasab of other corrupt people incl. NS and corrupt generals. But we have to start somewhere..buck must start at the top. No one is above the law.

Re: SC verdict expected in petitions against NRO

I have been watching different channels. And it looks like NRO is the only thing happening in Pakistan. What the heck?!
Where are discussions on other topics? So many channels, and ALL discussing nothing but NRO and Zardari!

This is just leg-pulling among Pakistan's political and ruling elite.

People are already hinting about mid-term.

looks like Pakistani awam are not allowed to have fun with sharab and Kabab, so they skewer their leaders and get drunk by pulling their shalwars down.

It should remind all of us the Moghal empror Rangila or the Romans of Nero era. While their countries were burning due to internal AND external threats, both Mogal and Roman elite were conducting tamashas.

Sadly All those Paks who were screaming about dhoom-krazy democracy have become willing allies to destroy the very political structure.

The worst outcome from this may be that Zardari government falls. That may result in another unstable 2 year long government by Q league, S League etc. Then all these intellectuals will beg Kiyani to impose army rule.

And the cycle will start all over again.

The same CJ and his judges will be signing yet another PCO under Kiyani and then there will be peace and prosperity all over Pakistan.

What a sad state of affairs. Pak's educated elite are treating our future as if it were a game.

We refuse to learn from history.

Re: SC verdict expected in petitions against NRO

There were people who wanted Musharraf out, and they cried for democracy.
Democracy arrived, but their favourite party did not win, so upsetting.
So now they wanted either marshal-law or have the court throw Zardari out or mid term election. Looks like they will get that too. Question is, if still their favourite party does not win, what are the other options they want to try.

^ who's the favourite party?? (excuse my ignorance)

Oh Bhai,

Golden Chance for Zardari... resign, get a temporary president from his party, get his cases dismissed from the SC and get back at the seat of presidency... nothing more all this can be done within a year's period, now this will not jeopardize Zardari's govt in Pakistan, his party still have the post of president and Primeminister... but to some people honor only means hiting & killing women...

koi (Supreme court) kitna bhi achcha kaam karey ussey kabhi nahin sarahna :)

kyon k hum sab khud chor (well the vast majority anyway, jaise awam waise leaders), kamzore aur weak character k hein iss liye system ko theek karney ke kabhi koshish nahin karni

People usu. come up with two types of weak arguments

No. 1: This is political victimisation
No. 2: Let the system continue and don't weaken the democratic process khuah koi kitna hee corrupt or kharab aadmi kyon na ho

bhyy kon kehta hai k system ko derail karo. I am also against military rule myself. But this does not also mean that we should take no action against known criminals who have looted national wealth, transferred money into foreign accounts (Swiss banks have now confirmed that they have US $60 million dollars held in their accounts in Zardari's name) and committed murders etc.

This is the first time in Pakistan's history that the apex court has announced a verdict against members of sitting government. That said this decision was widely expected and announcing it was the easiest part. How the apex court is going to enforce it and more importantly whether they can really implement it (i.e. get back all the stolen and looted national money) remains to be seen..

People were saying the same thing when Musharraf was facing impeachment in 2008, that he would face any cases against him and not resign......phir bhaaga na dum daba k

Such BS

very well said bro...
all in past 62 years this is the circle our world is moving around...

dont know what is that

Andhon main kane raje ya
kano main andhe raje

Looks like you guys don't understand how democracy works. When democracy was not at work, remember what happened when CJ was "about to rule" on an ordinance? He was thrown out, all judiciary was sacked etc, probably that is what you guys want to happen in Pakistan all the time - a chaos - currently the threat is not to Zardari government, but Zardari only. Losers have been talking about mid-term election soon after election was finished, so you will get all kind of jerks talking.
