ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday temporarily suspended the licence of former minister Babar Awan for not submitting a reply in the contempt case against him, DawnNews reported.
An 11-judge bench of the apex court headed by the Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry heard the case.
Awan’s request for more time to file the reply was rejected by the court.
During the hearing, Awan said he respected the court but would also defend himself.
The Supreme Court was of the view that 15 days had been granted to Awan and that the time was enough to file a reply.
Chief justice Iftikhar asked Awan if he was given a contempt of court notice by the Lahore High Court earlier.
On which, Justice Saqib Nisar reminded Awan that he was given the notice by a bench of the court headed by him and that the notice was rescinded once Awan requested for pardon.
Moreover, the court directed that a new lawyer be assigned in the Bhutto reference case.
The court also directed the authorities to inform President Asif Ali Zardari regarding the suspension of Awan’s licence and added that the hearing of the reference case would resume after a new lawyer was appointed.
Chalo iss khushi mein Babar Awan say kahein kay mithai bantey. Iss kaam mein toh woh mahir hai, marney walon kee khushi mein mithai bantna uss ka purana pesha hai.

Wou martial law lagnay pay mithayi baant ta hay, uskay bhi kuch asool hain.
Looks like Babar Awan is set to resume his law minister role after meeting with zardari.
oh and btw, where is this 18th amendment thing when a new minister inclusion is decided by the president? So Mr President, all powers lie with PM and parliament? Really?
Babar Awan has done no service to the government other then creating problems for them, but since he has come under attack from the SC he has been made a minister, another deliberate attempt. Awan lost one job and got another. :) Otherwise I think Maula Bux Chandio seemed to be a better candidate than him.
He is getting a reward from Govt. News is that he is now becoming new Law Minister
PS: Personally, I am totally against this law of contempt of court. IMO, parliament should abundant the law of “tauheen-e-aadalat”. This law was appropriate when justices used to speak by their decisions and not by 1000s of observations everyday. Having said all this, its still the law today, so Babar Awan is punished rightly.
