I have this open position in my department. l interwiewed a candidate . Asked tough questions did not find any communications issues. Candidate has all we are looking for and some more. It is hard to find people with right skills and experience for this role.
My boss wanted to talk to her and asked me to invite his peer and mine for this last interview.
In this interview this girl did not do well I am sure she got nervous with so many high level executives in the room.
My boss was impressed by her qualifications but was disappointed with her communications skills. He suggested we talk to a former employee of ours who is not current from skills perspective but knows our systems.
How do I convince him to hire the first candidate and not the second one ?
We got a new hire in my dept and she is under my training. Although she has good qualifications, she also has zero communication skills. I have no idea why they hired her. She can’t even talk.. points towards the screen when has an issue.
Tough spot to be in, I had seen a reorg with my boss gone and the future president of the group becoming my acting boss, while drinking at a conference he told me that he thought that a couple of people in my team were not right for the role and I needed to get rid of them. He felt they were too junior and were going to drag me down.
I could not just get rid of them, Not their fault that they were put in roles or had to deal with the amount of work or dealing with organizational BS no one should. I basically told him no, and that the time it will take to bring someone in and up to speed I can get them firing on all cylinders. He told me fine, but its my head he would come for. If my team did not deliver.
To be honest he was right, and I had to work extra hard to make sure these few people had it all under control? In a highly political environment. In my year end review which was 5 months later, he admitted he was wrong about the identified ppl in my team. At that tiime I had to tell him that no in FA r he was right, but I saw the potential and got it out of them. He was happy but said you know I was serious that as the top guy for your team, it would have been your head and not their's for missing the goals.
So.,, the reason of this story is, if you bring someone you can't be 100% behind, and if your boss doubts their ability, it could be a bumpy road. It was for me in the sense that I had to coach these ppl much more than had it been someone I did not go out on a limb for
