I came across an Urdu article today. It is written by Sayyid Adnan Kaka Khel Sb. An extract of this article is given below. I remember that once I requested everyone to join hands ans say “NO” to Roman Urdu. Following is the text I wrote at that time. After reading the article, I feel that it has started in our society too. May ALLAH protect us all.
I remember when I visited Turkey, I was shocked to see that they were using Roman Alphabets in their Script. Upon doing a little research, I found out that it was a great CONSPIRACY. The success of this plot has resulted in a total non-understanding of the actual Script.
A close friend of mine has done his BE from Turkey. He told me once that when he visited the Shrine of Maulana Rum (RA) in Qoniya, there were Persian “Ash’aar” written everywhere. He read one “Sheir” as if it was Urdu (Because he does not read/write/understand Persian) and to his amazement, almost all of the people there, including the “Mujaawars” encircled him and kept on requesting him to recite the rest of the “Ash’aar” one-by-one. Although they (including him) did not understand a word, but everyone enjoyed this Urdu-Like recitation.
So, you see! Even reading of the old Script has become a “Tabarruk” there. My question is, “Are we going in that direction too”? Will our children and grand-children read/write Urdu with Roman Alphabets resulting in a total isolation form our heritage? Will they look forward to others for the explanation and interpretations of our elders’ writings? These possibilities gives my Shocks and Shivers.
May ALLAH help us ALL! Ameen, Thumm Ameen. By rejecting Roman Urdu, at least we will make some difference, even if it is just a drop in the ocean.
I request all to stop using Roman Urdu and to start using Urdu Messengers and email agents or stick to proper English. Thanks!
Re: Say No to Roman Urdu
we should be focusing more on the ability of people to read at all first.
before we say no to roman urdu..
lets say yes to any urdu or english or punjabi or sindhi or baluchi or pashto..etc etc
(math, social and physical sciences wont hurt also)

:) ^
I personally would be very happy if people just came on one language and speak and write it properly. Be it any....all are beautiful...
But for unity and clarity one language would be good instead of many with none up to the standard...as is the case..
Re: Say No to Roman Urdu
I thought this was a NO to Urdu campaign. I was delighted.
Re: Say No to Roman Urdu
hmm but some people are not familiar with urdu transcript at least they get the verbal sense of it. and if one must say no one must give trend to the transcript before hand. very unlikely though since in pakistan we've had generations taking easy urdu and advance english.
Re: Say No to Roman Urdu
I personally don’t see any harm in using roman Urdu . Although Some times it is irritating and hard to understand. As there is no proper rules for writing roman urdu , every one has his/her own way of writing words . For example some may write syed or sayyid , in urdu language we have that zayir zabar thing which may change the whole course . I often find it difficult to write a urdu word in roman urdu which has sak.tah in it . There are some online dictionaries and user guides but clearly there is no agreed and defined solution. Therefore in my humble opnion if Urdu daans establish a standard for writing roman urdu , the problem may solve as every one will follow the same grammatical structure .
Btw that chap , Sayyid Adnan Kaka Khel Sb, isn’t he the same lad who made that famous speech in front of Musharraf ?
And should we say no to roman urdu , well I don’t think so , some thing is always better then nothing as the poster above me ( croquet) said ‘ some people are not familiar with urdu transcript at least they get the verbal sense of it’ . So those of us , who haven’t studied urdu as a subject , roman urdu is doing the job .
As long as they are teaching urdu as a subject in Pakistani schools , I don’t think we are going to end some where turkey did .
