say Cheeeeeeeeeeeeese

Any recomendations where to buy really good cheese.

I use the usual grocery store kraft / sargento stuff but I want to try something different.

Thanks

Re: say Cheeeeeeeeeeeeese

njgal, what kind of cheeses do you have in mind? trader joes carries its own direct purchases of most region specific ones like parmagiano reggiano, havarti, grueyere...

Re: say Cheeeeeeeeeeeeese

I don't know. I am not a cheese person but I want to give my recipes a bit of a kick.

I like cheese with a little "lachak" or "pull" Does that make any sense?

Sorry my taste pallette is craving something different. I know there are cheese nuts around here somewhere.

At trader joes - what would you say is the best cheese for lets say everyday pastas use. Or to make good homemade pizzas?

Re: say Cheeeeeeeeeeeeese

Depends on what type of cheese your looking for. PAthmark?shoprite carry the usual Sargento/Pollyo..etc branded retail cheese.....but also in their deli section, they have an assortment of fresh/exotic cheeses available, including good parmesan reggiano triangles that you have to grate/shred/slice yourself. They also have series of imported cheeses as well.

Re: say Cheeeeeeeeeeeeese

for pastas, you could grate in parmagiano reggiano, or romano. for pizzas, maybe a mix of mozzarella, provalone, monterrey jack..maybe even some goat cheese.. just go walk up to the cheese aisle, buy a few that look good to you in small portions. they even have assorted sampler platters. whole foods usually have free samples you can try.

what you are looking for are "sharp", "strong" or "aged" cheeses.

Re: say Cheeeeeeeeeeeeese

NJgal,

Have you tried the deli section of the grocery store? Usually the Kraft and Seargento are in a separate aisle and the gourmet deli cheeses have their own aisle. You can try herbed mozzarella. Have you tried goat cheese? It is sooooo yummy. Goat cheese is soft, creamy, and it has a tangy taste to it. Or you can try swiss, it makes a good sandwich cheese. Provolone is nice as well. How about Jahrlsberg cheese? It's similar to Swiss and is good for sandwiches. Pepperjack? Or you can try Havarti cheese, which I've also heard is nice.

You can take some ricotta cheese and mix it with a few tablespoons of tomato sauce and romano cheese to make a yummy sauce for baked ziti. If you're into mexican dishes, you can try manchego cheese.
