Perzactly! If it’s so unbelievable then don’t believe it. I sure don’t believe it. Something like this will need a lot of proof for me to accept it.

More to point it seems like people are trying to develop a public subliminal point by associating niqab with ultra conservatives to the point of impossible lifestyles … by rejecting the lifestyle one must tacitly reject the accessories it comes with.

This is really very nasty of me but I had a thought....this tradition is within a certain small group in a certain small area, yeah? I was thinking that there may perhaps be a plague of horrible ugliness going on there....to the point that they hafta hide it away for all time even from (or especially from!) the hubby!

I have visited that part of Saudi arabia for my work many a times, and I have seen this tribe as well.. Those tribes still prefer to live with their medieval time mentality. This attitude is never accepted by ISLAM, but you know that everyone in the world has its own interpretation of Islam.

Rijaal Alma people practice circumcision for boys at late age, particularly at 18. There would be a ceremony where a boy is being circumcised before many men of his tribe, proving one’s manhood of bearing pain. If he shows any sign of ‘ouch’, he’d lose his face and might never get married.

A 50-year-old Saudi woman asked for divorce after her husband lifted her face veil while she was sleeping, local press reported.

For 30 years, the wife said she never showed her face to her husband in conformity with the tradition of her native village near the south western Saudi city of Khamis Mushayt.

“After all these years, he tries to commit such a big mistake,” the wife told Saudi newspaper Al-Riyadh, after she left the house in total disbelief.

She said the husband apologized and promised never to do it again.

This is not the first case of husbands who have not seen their wives’ faces in decades.

In the past Al Arabiya has reported the case of Ali al-Qahtani, whose wife had been wearing the face veil for the entire ten years of their marrage. When he tried to take it off, she threatened to leave and only decided to stay after he swore never to try again.

Hassan Al-Atibi threatened to marry another woman if his wife didn’t show him her face. The woman nominated one of her friends who doesn’t observe this tradition as a possible new wife for him, saying this would be better than her showing her face.

And neither the husband or children of Om Rabea al-Gahdaray, 70, have ever seen her face. Al-Gahdaray says it is a family tradition, also followed by mother and sisters, which her husband accepted and never tried to change.

When asked how she could have kids without her husband ever seeing her face, she replied: “Marriage is about love, not faces.”

I suppose after 30 years most men would be curious to find out what there wife looks like and I am surprised that this man accepted such marital terms willingly. Is this opinion from Islam or an extreme understanding?

Observing pardah/viel originates from Islam and under no condition Mahrams and that too husband come under it. Bakwas !

Veil did not originate from islam. It was practised before islam and it practised in culture which do not follow islam as their religion. For example Rajhistaan (india) there women do pardah from unknown men. See any indian movie about Rajhistaan or a recent one named 'DOR'

There may be some explaination as why these tribes follow this strange custom. One of them is given by Mamaof3 :
