It’s reported today that a Bengali has been sentenced to have his hand cut off for stealing in the Kingdom. Fair enough, Saudi is strictly run according to Sharia, but when members of the SA royal family are patronising brothels and casinoes in LA, shouldn’t they be subject to the same laws?
No, in my opinion. Land of the law in LA if broken is applied across the board to all offenders, and the last I heard that it was not unlawful to patronize brothels in LA. That may be the case in Riyadh.
Saudis can visit brothels in other countries to their hearts content, but they should also try to set up entertainment places in their own country. In terms of chopping off hands of thieves, it is a barbaric practice.
I am not sure if the Law in Saudi Arabia provides immunity from prosecution to the Royals (the case of the Princess who was beheaded for having an affair with a non-Saudi). But I also read sometime ago that one Prince who was caught doing drugs was let go while the poor Pakistani who sold him the drugs is rotting in jail.
It may be politically incorrect to say, but the Gulf Arabs are the lowest creatures on the civility scale. I guess change in poltical climate will make them behave better. I hope the current war on Terrorism brings about some positive changes in the Gulf Arab world. Amen.

You meant LAs Vegas didnt you? There are no "casinos" in Los Angeles like the one you are referring to.
Yes I meant Las Vegas, apologies to residents of LA who might have taken offence ![]()
I don’t have anything against Arabs as individuals, but I don’t understand why they have these double standards in their courts. Even if we don’t address the SA royal family as such, why is it always Pakistanis, Bengalis, Fillipinos etc that get the benefits of Sharia law? We hear so much about young kids from the subcontinent being bought by rich Arabs and used as camel jockeys, or prostitutes. So why don’t any of these Arabs involved in these sort of rings get to feel the harshness of Shariah law?
It seems your best chance of being a foreigner and escaping justice is to get a job as a British nurse, kill an australian and then appeal to the British embassy which should straighten things out nicely.
Judge, if they break the Laws in other countries, than they should be tried by the Laws of that country, and not by the Laws of their own country. But if they break laws in Saudi Arabia, they should be tried as anyone else is tried there. The strict laws in Gulf countries is just a tool that they have used to retain their power and rule. Under the disguise of such laws, the free press and political expression is pretty much discouraged. However, things are slowly changing as people are becoming more and more aware of the double lives of the Royal families of the Gulf Arab states.
The best solution is perhaps (as Friedman says) is to let them experiment with Theocracies and Religious movements and eventually they will get tired of it. Just as it is happening in Iran: They were sick of the Shah, they brought Clergy to power, and now they are getting sick of the Clergy. Everyone needs a chance to get things out of their system.
Judge, no need to apologize to people of LA. Comparing it with Las Vegas was the biggest compliment anyone could give to the LA-ites. If there’s a place where the collective uptightness of people match that of the ex-Soviet republics, it is LA. It is a dumpster of stupid morons and it churns out crappy movies. The best and intelligently done movies are always made in New York.
I apologize to Las Vegas residents for mentioning LV in the same sentence as LA. Sorry.

Royal Family is immune from the punishment as long as you are a male.
As for females…they have very little regards for that gender.
