Saudi Prince changes Fox's anti-Muslim bias on Paris Riots

Interesting article from the Guardian - and interesting spin on how privately-owned media is vulnerable to shareholder influence. In this case, it was a positive influence because through buying large parts of Fox this Prince was able to change Fox coverage within 30 minutes.

But imagine how many other news outlets are likely to be corrupted by shareholder interests.

Government funding with editorial freedom & independence is the key to healthy media. Media should be assured of receiving government funding at the same time as being free to criticse and undermine the goverment if needed.

Fox News was ordered to alter its coverage of the riots in France after a Saudi prince with shares in its parent company News Corporation complained to Rupert Murdoch.
Prince Alwaleed bin Talal bin Abdul aziz Al-Saud told a conference in Dubai he had telephoned Mr Murdoch after seeing a strapline on the news channel describing the disturbances as “Muslim riots”.

“I picked up the phone and called Murdoch and said that I was speaking not as a shareholder, but as a viewer of Fox. I said that these are not Muslim riots, they are riots,” Campaign Middle East magazine quoted the prince as saying.

“He investigated the matter and called Fox and within half an hour it was changed from ‘Muslim riots’ to ‘civil riots’.”

The prince said his intervention had been an example of how Muslim people can change the portrayal of their religion in the western media - although few Fox viewers will have his contacts.

It is not the first time he has admitted to trying to influence Mr Murdoch’s coverage of sensitive issues.

In a recent Financial Times interview he said he did not wish to “intrude” into the management of companies in which he holds shares.

But he said he did talk to Mr Murdoch and Richard Parsons, the chief executive of AOL Time Warner, about where he believed the media had got things wrong.

“My job is to open their eyes to things they may not have seen,” he said.

Last month’s rioting marked France’s worst unrest since the student riots of May 1968. Thousands of cars were set alight following the death of two teenage boys who were allegedly being pursued by police.

Re: Saudi Prince changes Fox’s anti-Muslim bias on Paris Riots

On one hand you say that the outlets are ‘likely’ to be corrupted by shareholder interests, what guarantee would ‘govt funding’ have on freedom? In my opinion, it’d be just as private funding influence.

I think there shouldn’t be “major” stakeholder in media outlets  … no one should allow to own more than 5% of the shares.

Re: Saudi Prince changes Fox’s anti-Muslim bias on Paris Riots

You are right onthe money about govt funding to have the same effect as pvt. funding, becaue there is no such thing as govt. funding.

Remember, the Federal Reserve Bank (US central bank which regulates all banks and our money supply) is not a public instituiion, it is private (Calling it Federal Reserve Bank is an equivoation technique to confuse regular Joes like yuo and me).

Anyone wanna tell me who the owners are? Here is where all the fun begins.

Re: Saudi Prince changes Fox’s anti-Muslim bias on Paris Riots

The BBC is government funded. The fact that the BBC tried to embarass the government on the WMD issue testifies that the system can work. The selection of the governors is done by a cross-party committee, that makes it difficult for the government, even with a majority, to nominate whomever it want to run the BBC.

The BBC is continually accused by just about every government of being biased against the government or favouring the opposition. In the first Gulf War, the government accused the BBC of being sympathetic to Saddam Hussein!

Re: Saudi Prince changes Fox's anti-Muslim bias on Paris Riots

Despite the "grand successes" shown by Canadian and European socialist systems, the government isn't the answer to everything.

The intervening Saudi prince did nothing more than any other corrupted shareholder.

Re: Saudi Prince changes Fox's anti-Muslim bias on Paris Riots

It was correct call it was a civil riot it was not just muslims involved in this riot it was non muslims also, labelling one group alone obviously adds a racist slant to this incident.

Re: Saudi Prince changes Fox's anti-Muslim bias on Paris Riots

Well done to him! This is the type of power Jewish groups exert all the time. Part of the reason they are so powerful.

If Muslims did this more often, things would be so much different for us.

Saudis royals are the dumbest people ever, if they had sense they would pull there money out of the US pronto before it gets frozen!

Re: Saudi Prince changes Fox's anti-Muslim bias on Paris Riots

sense? they have sense.. and they know what they are doing.. if the Arabs in that country had any sense they'd topple their government before they all go back to the same oil-less desert shi*hole it was before hitting Oil..

Re: Saudi Prince changes Fox's anti-Muslim bias on Paris Riots

They know what they doing really is that right hmm don't think so with the saudi royals bending over backwards for the US in providing military assistance by use of military bases/logistics in destroying iraq and investing more than 750 billion in the US economy you can see clearly where thier ill thought loyalty is , as for the people toppling their government their are coups happening every other day just because you can't see that on CNN don't think its not happening.
