RIYADH: A Saudi court sentenced a preacher convicted of raping his five-year-old daughter and torturing her to death to eight years in prison and 800 lashes, a lawyer said Tuesday.

In a case that drew widespread public condemnation in the kingdom and abroad, the court also ordered Fayhan al-Ghamdi to pay his ex-wife, the girl’s mother, one million riyals ($270,000) in “blood money,” lawyer Turki al-Rasheed told AFP.

Blood money is compensation for the next of kin under Islamic law.

The girl’s mother had demanded 10 million riyals ($2.7 million).

Ghamdi’s second wife, accused of taking part in the crime, was sentenced to 10 months in prison and 150 lashes, said Rasheed, who is lawyer for the girl’s mother.

Ghamdi was convicted of “raping and killing his five-year-old daughter Lama,” he added.

The girl was admitted to hospital on December 25, 2011 with multiple injuries, including a crushed skull, broken ribs and left arm, extensive bruising and burns, activists said. She died several months later.

Ghamdi, a regular guest on Muslim television networks despite not being an authorised cleric in Saudi Arabia, had confessed to having used cables and a cane to inflict the injuries, human rights activists said earlier this year.

Randa al-Kaleeb, a social worker from the hospital where Lama was admitted, said the girl’s back was broken and that she had been raped “everywhere”.

Reportedly, Ghamdi had tortured and raped his daughter after he had doubted her virginity.

Rights activists in the kingdom had been campaigning for harsher punishment of Ghamdi when reports emerged in January that the court would only give him a short jail term and order him to pay blood money to the mother.

In ultra-conservative Saudi Arabia, where rape and murder are among several crimes punishable by death, a father cannot be executed for murdering his children, nor can husbands be executed for murdering their wives.

Such crimes carry a jail sentence between five to 12 years.

A few months ago, I read about it that this man got away with these crimes. He only had to pay around $50,000 to kid’s mother. seems like, ‘court’ overturned earlier decision on external pressure.

btw, 600 or 800 lashes. Will he be able to survive that many lashes. isn't it equivalent death sentence?

Is this Islamic law? If yes pretty screwed up. Crime such as murder should be either death or behind bars for the rest of the life.

If the same crime had been committed by a Pakistani, Indian, Sri Lankan or an African Arab immigrant, he would have been beheaded!

I suppose the warped logic of that may be as women cannot earn a living so killing the father would be killing the sole breadwinner. In that case the state would prefer women and children to live with rapists and paedophiles rather than allow the woman to be treated as an equal.

There doesn't seem to be any dearth of idiotic, barbaric laws in Saudi Arabia. A mere 12 years is apparently the MAXIMUM jail sentence for murdering one's child or wife! Unbelievable. But this monster got even less, just 8 years for raping and killing his daughter. Height of misogyny, I'd day. And this is the same country that loves giving capital punishment to expatriates and poor locals, including for things like "witchcraft and sorcery." Goodness.

Like someone said 800 lashes, he won't survive. Beheading would be a faster process.

In any case, wth was he thinking when he did that to his daughter!

It depends on severity of lashes. Saudi lashing is administered under a doctor's vigilance. No chance of anyone dying of it.
Also, the lashes are not inflicted all at the same time.

This man deserved to be executed for raping and killing his own daughter. No amount of blood money or lashes could be enough.

quick execution is not enough for him. he should be crucified or impaled.

Can we ask for deporting him to an non-Arab jail? The great "justice" of Saudi Arabia, being Saudi and probably a "preacher" the justice is toned down, punishment lowered, victim jaaye bhaar mai. I wish someone rapes him in the jail i.e. "goga till death".

Personally I disagree with the death penalty but this sentence is certainly far too lenient.
