Saudi grand mufti terms jumping traffic signal is `haram'.

Indeed a right call especially in the wake of country’s notorious reputation for having one of the highest car accident rates in the world.

**RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti Abdulaziz al-Shaikh has reiterated his fatwa against drivers who jump red traffic light, Al Arabiya News Channel has reported.**

The Grand Mufti, who is the most senior religious authority in Saudi Arabia, said that such a violation of traffic law is a “major sin”, and referred to a Quranic verse which says, “If you kill one person unjustly it is as if you killed the whole humanity, and if you saved one person it is as if you saved the whole humanity.”
This is not the first time the cleric has issued such a fatwa. In 2010, he is reported to have used a similar edict, saying the person who caused the death of another person because of such a violation is guilty of involuntary manslaughter.
Saudi Arabia has one of the highest rates of car accidents in the world with an average of 17 fatalities a day, according to a recent report in Dubai’s Gulf News.
In 2010, a report by the kingdom’s General Directorate of Traffic revealed almost a third of traffic accidents in Riyadh were due to drivers violating traffic signals.

finally, a fatwa to save lives rather than destroying lives. :k:

Re: Saudi grand mufti terms jumping traffic signal is `haram’.

Can’t wait for the day when he issues fatwa against suicide bombings and killing innocent people in the name of Islam.

Re: Saudi grand mufti terms jumping traffic signal is `haram’.

Cant wait for the day when you will do some research before posting/issuing fatwa on some thing related to islam

Saudi grand mufti says suicide bombers will go to hell

Re: Saudi grand mufti terms jumping traffic signal is `haram’.

I don’t understand why do they have to issue fatwa on this issue. You just make a law and implement it as a state. Fatwas are needed where it is hard to draw a line and boundaries seem blurry.

Re: Saudi grand mufti terms jumping traffic signal is `haram’.

Being the Grand Mufti,he can issue FATWA and it is the Government that has to make a law on this.

I agree with Kchughtai. There was no need of fatwa. Following the law of the land is an obligation on every Muslim, even if the Muslim is living in a non Muslim country, as long as the law does not interfere with his core Islamic obligations. Instead of a fatwa, a reminder from mosques was suffice. But then we are talking about dumb headed Saudis. They won’t stop breaking a law till you tell them that they can go to hell for doing that.

LMAO! Owned.

Re: Saudi grand mufti terms jumping traffic signal is `haram’.

What is the fuss about this?

Obviously the law was not being followed.

Muftis job is to issue fatwa and it CAN be given on daily life matters too. Not necessarily on something which is blurred or doubtful.

At least those who respect fatwas will restrain themselves from reckless driving and causing loss of lives and properties, one would hope.

Why criticize just to criticize?

Re: Saudi grand mufti terms jumping traffic signal is `haram’.

did you read this, pal?

Re: Saudi grand mufti terms jumping traffic signal is `haram’.

Doesn’t anyone feel that this cheapens the effect of a fatwa?

Re: Saudi grand mufti terms jumping traffic signal is `haram’.

This is not some thing new and scholars are interpreting the same , specialy to follow the rules of land if it does not contradict with islam.

See these for example.

Fatwa regarding violating traffic laws

it is just communication of that basic sharia principles.

Re: Saudi grand mufti terms jumping traffic signal is `haram’.

Fatwa translates into ruling. Its a ruling by someone religious. Our lack of understanding of Islamic Jurisprudence makes it appear like a Fatwa is a major thing. Historically they were issued like candy.
