With alot of desis in Canada having DishNetwork for desi channels in CA, this is an interesting read. As many as 750,000 Canadian households may be receiving satellite television illegally. The estimated cost to the Canadian broadcasting system is about $400 million per year. More than 1/4th of the satellite users in Canada are using US based satellite services, namely Dishnetwork and DirecTV. The main target is now pirate dealers, who no longer have the legal freedom to carry this business out, and their fines have been increased to $100,000 and will be forced to give up their customer lists if caught. The same happened to alot of websites in the US selling equipment, and most of them have been taken off. The thing that surprises me is the fact that why is Dish Network pressing so hard against signal piracy in Canada if no one there can legally subscribe to it?
anhaaN...so only the companies are targetted thus far...not people who have the illegal satellite...
That means we live another day. :k:
dirty canadians :)
To answer your question Spock, the last I heard, DishNetwork was in the process of syndicating some of its content for the Canadian audience through the local Bell Expressvu satellite service...
maybe they're nearing an agreement/alliance and want to put a stop to the gray market before they officially launch... ??? Its a good tactic, because personally, when DishNetwork starts offering content in Canada legally, I'd have no problems switching to it!
That is very true Umar. The main reason is, Dishnetwork offers a wide range of ethnic channels, which Canadian's are dieing to see. It's not only the desi's who are after the service of illegal satellite. Bell was once Dishnetwork, until the federal government emposed a rule to show Canadian content. That's why Bell and Dish have similar receivers.
Too bad Dishnetwork isn't offered in Canada legally, or I would subscribe legit.
So if you ever hear a desi say he has Dishnetwork legally in Canada, its not true :p
Well you can have Dish Network legally, just suscribe by giving an American address of a friend or relative. It works ;)

I dont think it does them any good to go after individual people. However, they love to go after dealers, as that way they get a major chunk of potential of people, who might end up getting illegal dish. The best option, if you really want illegal dish would be to end up doing it yourself, as dealers are eventually going to be wiped off, atleast most of them, and they keep on coming up with new ways to zap receivers, so you wont have to rely on them. I personally do not like dealers, they are ripping people (their bait) off, there arent many dealers in the US for Dishnetwork, so people have learnt how to do it themselves.
