You can get problem with USB to RS232 adaptors. They cant preform all the functions of a port with BIOS support. Most simple tasks though will work fine off USB. I bought a IBM X24 dock just for the hardware serial port.
Their are some better PCMCIA to RS adaptors but quite pricey and rare.
