Satellite cable for laptop?

I hope this isn’t an illegit. question.

So far I’ve been using null cable (I believe) to download files on the receiver using a desktop. I noticed the same type of serial port is not available on laptops.

I was wondering if there’s still a method to download files using a laptop instead of a desktop?

Re: Satellite cable for laptop?

Re: Satellite cable for laptop?

Sadiyah,

Is it an RS232 cable? If your lappy doesn’t have it you can use a USB-RS232 adapter. Previously I bought a heavier laptop just so I’d have the serial port, but then I found the adapter and dropped that old laptop like a sack of potatoes

Here’s the one i use :

Re: Satellite cable for laptop?

If you are using a null cable, then the method Tofi Baba is proposing will not work on its own. You still have to use a null cable to connect.

A normal RS-232/Comm cable is like: 2-3, 3-2, 5-5 (pin on one side connecting to pin on the other side)

A null cable is different: 2-2, 3-3, 5-5. But it is easy to make.

Re: Satellite cable for laptop?

Tofibaba, don't think so, but I'll look into it.

WitchDr, I believe it's some sort of a null cable. How exactly do you go about making one?

Re: Satellite cable for laptop?

You can get problem with USB to RS232 adaptors. They cant preform all the functions of a port with BIOS support. Most simple tasks though will work fine off USB. I bought a IBM X24 dock just for the hardware serial port.

Their are some better PCMCIA to RS adaptors but quite pricey and rare.

Re: Satellite cable for laptop?

What kind of receiver is it? Have u tried googling info on it?

Re: Satellite cable for laptop?

Tofi, I just double checked the cable I use is a Null Modem Cable. The only problem is there's no provision for it to fit in my laptop.
