Has any of you guys read this book “Satanic Verses” by Salam Rushdie? I haven’t read this book but intending to bring it home from a local library but I thought it would be rather appropriate to ask my friends if they have read and then I wouldnt have to bring this controversial book.
Im just interested in the actuall plot of the book. Because someone in my club told me that this book is based on fiction and the sin which that silly guy has committed is that he has named the characters on Holy Names (like Gibreel Farishta, Saladin, Ayesha etc) other wise if he hadnt put these names in then it would be just another book. I am a person with limited knowledge so Im just asking if thats the right point of view.
Before replying bear in mind that Im just enquiring and I havent read the book. Everyone is welcome to give his/her views.
–I know I’ll be a King One day, When Im Dead, They Gonna take me on their shoulders, Just like a King–
First, the Satanic Verses starts off real slow. The first third is hard to get through.
Then, yes, the book is blasphemous, offering up an alternative version of the prophet Muhammed's life. Especially when it comes to the 2 satanic verses - verses given to Muhammed by Satan, who initially thought they were revealed by Allah. However, this "dream sequence" of Muhammed's life is not the overall plot, so it may seem to anyone who has glanced over the book cover to think that it's really not that bad.
Ahem, thanks for that Astrofan. I really appreciate that you gave your views, but the question is, is this book is really worth reading, because apart from its controversial issues, it is said to be one of the outstanding litrery works by Salman Rushdie.
Need some more views if any?

Hmm thats a one sensible point you have raised Dopey. This forum is visited by both Muslim and Non Muslim friends, so trying to avoid any point less discussion I must ask for objective point of views.
Thankyou

Sorry freestylla…actually I was planning to dig up a paper I wrote evaluating the Satanic Verses during my undergraduate years. I wanted to review that but couldn’t locate it. So, the other option would be for me to actually get a hold of that book and review that. And I have to warn you that I can be very lazy.
Overall, when I originally read it, I thought the book was a difficult read; and secondly, sad as it may sound, I found it quite repulsive…especially considering the fact that a Muslim himself had written it. Distortion of the facts that a group of people firmly believe in is just inhumane. However, the book used excellent vocabulary and fancy way of presentation, that I am sure any person involved with literature has to appreciate.
If you would like to discuss the book any further, you would have to give me atleast another two weeks.
Ahmed Deedat, wrote/gave a lecture about the satanic verses....if you do a search you'll probably be able to find it on the net...i'd paste it here, but i don't feel comfortable rueful smile he says things like they are and doesn't leave much out.
From a purely literary point I found the book to be quite boring. Rushdie is too wordy and tries to impress with his wordsmithing whereas I like authors who are able to draw a reader into the situation. Rusdie’s work made me feel like a cursory observer than really get a feel for the book.
From a religion angle, I was intrigued about what the hoopla was about but felt that he knew what he was doing and it was just to get some cheap publicity. A phenomenon applied by movie ppl and singers as well e.g. last temptation of christ which was a pretty awful movie as well as madonna;s like aprayer video which tried to support a rather lame song even by Madonna’s standards
Don't spend your money on it. I did but I got it on sale for $ 2.99. Not worth reading. Probably because the muslim in me hated it so much. He used words like abey, yaar etc. Salman became a big seller because of muslim community's shoor & sharaba. I don't think many foreigners could have read & understood the book because of the desi pharases & language. Wish I had eaten another value meal instead off buying it.
la hawla wa la quwwatta ilah billah
..that ******* rushide insulted our beloved Prophet sal allahu alayhi wa sallam and the beloved Mothers of the Believers and he deserves to die (insha Allah he will die a horrible death and then be punished in hell forever)
please dont read this book if you value your imaan. as a muslim brother i am advising you.
Rushdie is an evil infidel apostate kaafir murtad, and all those who support him and defend his kufr are also kaafir murtads.
( I am generally a gentle guy but this is one matter i am totally and absolutely fundamental on. Read the fatawa of any classical muslim scholar about the penalty for one who insults the Prophet alayhisalatosalam)
how can a Muslim even think of reading this crap now that everyone knows it contains insults to our Beloved Nabi sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam!
Okies Okies guys, well this means that Satanic Verses has scored poorly in this forum, so Im quitting it. My first intention was to read it for just the sake of argument, but now f**k it. Any other controversial book in your minds, guys?

First of all shukriya kom_dgk bhai, I really appreciate that you are so caring for us all in the sense that you dont want us to loose our faith on some stupid book which was not even appreciated by the 59 million muslims (or more) from all over the world.
I totally agree with you that as Muslims (including all the sacts and religious groups among Muslimhood) we have a firm belief that Almighty Allah has promised us the horrible end for those who refuse to follow the ultimate path.
Another small thing I want to discuss that, it would be more appreciatable if we discuss our knowledge and words of enlightment in English; not because we want to act posh or something stupid like that, but due to the fact that lot of other Muslim and Non Muslim brothers visit these pages as well and they are unable to understand our language (specially in Roman Manuscript), and my aim is spread the word of truth to everyone (if possible).
Keep coming up with your decent replies and give me piece of your knowledge on how to prevent this type of literature keep coming out.
--I know I'll be a King One day, When Im Dead, They Gonna take me on their shoulders, Just like a King--
Rushdie used to only be known in the literary circles of the world, but thanks to khomeini he is now a house hold name, he sybolizes the struggle for free speech. Everytime someone mentions rushdie, people think violent and repressive muslims burning down bookstores. Just imagine if there was no fatwa, no one would care about this idiot.
BTW, he IS a very good writer, though Satanic Verses is one of his weaker works. Get Midnight's Children or Haroun and the Sea of Stories, they are literary classics.
I have no idea why people got so worked up over this book (most of them don't even know whats in it), it's literary fiction, if you think a person's imaan can be affected by a book such as this then there are bigger problems here.
