Can anyone tell me how you tie a sari? An aunty bought me back a couple from India - I asked her to get me the belt kind but she’s come back with yards and yards of fabric that I’m supposed to somehow pleat?
Thing is they are really nice and I have a wedding coming up that I had planned to wear them to…if I get in lots of practice now I may still be able to wear them.
thanks for that, the photos were pretty usueful although I can see I'm going to have to get someone to help me get dressed! Don't know how these people that wear saris all the time ever manage to get dressed on their own.........no wonder everyone has servants!

It only takes a few minutes to tie one up if u know what u are doing and have some practice of doing it. The best way for a novice is to ask someone. Indians are brought up watching everyone tie them, for them it is quite easy to tie one up.
Oh Sheesh .. i luv saris.. bu ti donno how to wear em myself.. :-( .. so most of the time..errrRrrr all the time... :) .. my ma helps me with it.. but once u r done.. it looks juss fabulous!

If my mummy has to go to a party waghera wearing a sari
she does the plaits in the morning and fixes them with two three safety pins
that way when she is getting ready all she has to do is wear the sari and not waste time making the plaits
thanks anchal, that was a really good tip. First attempt was not so good.....couldn't walk at all - maybe that's what my mum means when she says I need to walk more ladylike??
Second attempt I think I did it too loosely and it unravelled as I was walking....imagine if that happened in public!

the best thing bout not getting it to tight is
when you stuff it inside the peticoat and start wrapping it around yourself
the first wrap around your hips , leave it a bit loose to give your legs room for walk
some ppl keep it real tight and end up with their butt sticking out
Another tip to keep in mind is to tie the petticoat higher in the back and just lower than your navel in the front.....so that it forms a triangle shape. This method accentuates the waist-line and provides a more shapely finish to the whole sari.
Although you will hear that an accomplished sari-wearer never uses pins.....use them. Use them liberally if you are not comfortable because confidence in your walk will come when you know that your sari isn't going to fall out.
