Why is it that Indian saris can have a ton of more work and Pakistani saris, made on the same material cost like triple the price for half of the amount of work? Is it because Pakistanis do sari work by hand only or something? I really don’t understand it and can’t understand why women are willing to pay so much for such plain Pakistani saris.
for example look at the prices on these saris:

Re: Sari Question
It aslo depends upon the quality of kaam and material and also if the sari is designer. Also, labor in India is cheaper than in Pakistan.
Re: Sari Question
Yes Right eastern!!
i like indian cuts and style but don't like meterial..:)
Re: Sari Question
Because the kind of work and material?
I've been to so many Indian shops here and they sell clothes made of the really weird materials with weird kaam on it...but just because there's ALOT of kaam on it, they charge so much. Pakistani clothes on the other hand, at least the expensive ones, have decent material and kaam.
Re: Sari Question
I've seen plenty of stuff being from houston we have pakistani and indian things and a chiffon sari with a small thin border is so expensive in pakistani stores or from those sellers where as at an indian store you can have something with a broader border (think hum tum movie days). Now granted sometimes indian clothing looks like a firework threw up all over it where as pakistani stuff is more sophisticated but there are plenty of times when you just go to a store to buy a sari with a nice border, no crazy work in the middle and a simple blouse and get ripped off at the paki stores and both are made on chiffon or something. it's just odd. Is Indian labor is really that cheap compared to pakistani?
Re: Sari Question
well then I guess it depends on your own experiences...because I've been to indian and Pakistani shops here in NY and there is a vast difference in price and quality.
Re: Sari Question
I can easily say i've been to ny too and places like karishmas in jackson heights at the time (maybe 3-4 years ago) had great quality saris that were not tacky looking and elegantly done that are still cheaper than what paki vendors charge. I'm going there in august can you recommend any pakistani shops to check out sari and regular stuff wise?
Re: Sari Question
Oh yeah....karishma and lavanya are two nice places and have nice stuff...but they really do charge a whole lot as well. Another shop that I used to like was Armaan's but when I went last, the quality of their stuff was really downhill...but I bought a nice saree from them a few years back...absolutely gorgeous.
I always liked India Saree Palace, they have some nice printed chiffon sarees for under $55.
Otherwise, if you want shalwar kameezes etc there's a few shops on Coney Island avenue between I and Newkirk Ave in Brooklyn...Lahore Fashions (not sure how it is but u can check it out), this shop next to Raheela's (I forget what it's called but I always liked the stuff she had). I saw some nice semiformals (not wedding but good for davats/Eid) for <150....there are like 3-4 smallish loose-fabric shops on that block
I don't know any shops that sell Pakistani sarees though....if u buy from a vendor, it depends on vendor too...there's one kind of saree I'm looking at and I've gotten different quotes from different vendors
Re: Sari Question
the only time i saw pakistani fashion was like when some aunty gave me her card at the pakistan day parade lol oh well maybe someone will start a good pakistani shop that is conveniently located sooner or later. thanks for the shopping info :)
Re: Sari Question
Lol I bet it was that next-door-to-raheela's lady
Re: Sari Question
well it could me more to do with the volume of sarees india makes as compared to Pakistan. The greater the quantity the cheaper the price.
I India, sarees are as widely worn as salwar kameez / churidaars.
But i think in Pakistan very very few women wear sarees. In fact in one of the morning shows on ARY the host was saying that saree is not a Pakistani dress ( as it is thought to be a hindu outfit as declared during the time of Zia ). So it could be because of the rarity of the product.
And you can thank the saas bahu serials of India for TOTALLY killing the saree and imitation jewelry market.
