i know this is an old topic but I came across it n could not resist posting...
i do happen to consider myself an expert on sari wearing since I wear them every damn day to college.
neways, amelie, you don't really need to have tight fitting petticoat to get a shapely sari. In fact you don't have to tie it really tight around the waist either. The shape comes from pulling the fabric tightly as you pull it around to make the pallu. Personally, I wear unstitched saris.
One recommendation is that try getting hooks on the petticoat instead of azar band. That way you don't have a bulge where you tie it.
In fact, I say dont get a tight fitting petticoat because its going to be uncomfortable and limit walking.
