I don’t know if they have that tradition thing in karachi or else where. We definately have that in Punjab. Where someone from guy’s family usually a younger brother or nephew becomes a sarbala.
The purpose i have seen is to get that sarbala some money for wearing nice outfit with pagri.
Is it the tradition or its my family thats scaring me?
yeah it is tradition in punjab area any one know abt that rasam jiss meiN bride main door pakar ke kahari hoti haiN ?? and the one is jahaN bro in law good meiN bath jata hai pacay le ke jaN chorta hai ( thanks god mera koi bro in law nahi hai ) :halo: haha
Original word could have been drived from Sanskrit. Seh-baala...Associate groom. Or Sir-baala...replaceable groom(in case the groom disappears). Many weddings in old days used to happen amidst a feud and fight between two sides with a very good chance of Groom getting his head chopped by someone. Seh-baala will take his place and bring the bride home for tribe's honor no matter what. I am sure originally groom used to be 12 or 14 yr olds while Sarbaala few years younger but oddly grooms have grown older(sometimes 35 yr:-)) with time but sarbala have become even younger with the tradition turning into only a tradition without any practical use with time.
This tradition is paractised in many parts of the sub-continent but almost regisiously in Punjab by Hindus, Muslims, Christians and Sikhs alike.
Another reminder of Punjab's once relatively secular past.
mehroo,
thats reminded me of my dewar,
he sat on my lap and asked for 10.000 rupee. :)
I gave him 100, witht he promise that he can have more next time. :-)
Mere mutabiq Shehbalay ka sab se important kaam dolha bhai ke noton ke haar main se:
a) waqtan fawaqtan note noch noch kar apne jaib main dalna
b) jo note kamzori ki waja se jhar jaein..un ko bhi jaib mai dalna :halo:
is ke ilawa jo mehmaan noton ki shakal main gift dein..un ko jaib main dalna aur waisi wali accounting karna hai jo Enron ne ki thi!
Gadha: Yar imagine a Shahbala is generally a kid and they are saying he is generally dubbed as the next person to get married…yar..hum ne aiwein itna waqt zia kia…sab kuch chor chaar kar Shahbala he ban jaate!
its very interesting to learn about how every family is different.
Thanks ChannMahi for the background :)
Nia, yes in karachi..they have shahbalas in wedding..but i have never seen a guy sitting in the bride's lap. In very few weddings that i went..shahbala is a kid.. but most of the weddings i have been to its usually adult guys that were shahbalas..and they are not necessary groom's brother. They can be cousins..or friends..or whoever...what i always thought of shahbala..is kay its a person..whose there to be with the groom all the time..to assist him on stage..to collect money on stage..to help him bring food and stuff..due to tons of rosepetal lariyaan that covers grooms face. In my parents' wedding my chacha wasn't the shahbala but my abbu's cousin..so in my family..its mostly the closest friend that you have..to me shahbala was like groom's bestman.
