Shoaib-Sania
Meet The Newlyweds!
‘We Knew We Wanted To Be Together’
Through their whirlwind romance and a controversy that overshadowed their wedding announcement, Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik were sure of one thing – their faith in each other. In an exclusive interview a week after their nikah to an international magazine, the newlyweds discuss love, marriage and babies.
At what point did you realise that you are finally married?
Sania: Actually, it still hasn’t sunk in.
What was the first week as a married couple like?
Sania: We went out shopping with my bhai and bhabhi. Then we went to a club. And then for dinner we went to a Lucknowi restaurant which is one of my favourites. Once we got home, we sat and watched Karthik Calling Karthik.
Who is the more romantic of the two?
Sania: He is more romantic. When I was getting the mehndi done, he sat with me for four hours because he wanted to. One of the things we do is that when we are eating together, we feed each other first.
What are the things that you like about each other?
Shoaib: She is very adjusting, extremely sweet and very punctual. More importantly, she doesn’t get angry.
Sania: If my mom hears Shoaib say that I don’t get angry, she’ll probably not believe him. Growing up, I’ve always been short-tempered. But I don’t get angry when he’s around.
Shoaib: Also, both of us are homebodies. We love watching movies.
Sania: We’ve spent the last seven days together and we haven’t felt like we are in each other’s face. It’s been very easy to live with him.
You knew each other for four months before getting married. That was enough?
Sania: For us, things didn’t start immediately when we met in Hobart. We developed feelings only when we started speaking to each other on the phone.
Shoaib: We met at an Indian restaurant with lots of other people including her dad. I had met her twice before so I thought it would be rude if I didn’t talk to her. She told me that she was playing in Hobart, so I asked if she’s playing the next day because I wanted to watch her play.
Sania: He came the next day and while I was preparing for the match, he spent time with Dad, who really liked him.
Shoaib: After the match, we went for dinner with some other people.
Sania: When he had asked me for my number the previous day, I was very wary. So I had given him my temporary Australian number. I gave him my Indian number the very next day. And, suddenly we were constantly texting and then we started talking on the phone for hours. So that’s where things started for us.
**Was there a moment when you thought she/he was the person you wanted to spend the rest of your life with?
**Shoaib: I don’t think we had even thought that we’d marry so soon.
Sania: I didn’t want to marry until the end of the year. But then, things just fell into place. We just went along with how we felt for each other.
*What did your mom think of this relationship in the early days?
*Sania: Mom and I are very close so I told her almost immediately. They met in Dubai about three to four weeks after we had met in Hobart.
Who did you talk to first about Sania?
Shoaib: I told my mom first. She was happy for me but her first reaction was that this is an India-Pakistan relationship.
Sania: Actually, that’s been everyone’s reaction. My mom never thought of this but my dad did. It took him two days to get used to the idea.
Even before you got married, there was an onslaught of controversies. How did you support each other?
Shoaib: Sania always knew the truth so I was very confident. We were together and surrounded by people who loved and supported us.
Sania: Hats off to my parents who supported Shoaib like they have stood by me even before he became a part of the family. That got us all much closer.
Shoaib: Words are not enough to explain how much I appreciate the faith they have shown in me.
**What expectations do you have from each other?
**Sania: When I look at married couples, very often it seems like love has taken a backseat. I don’t want that happening with us. At the risk of sounding like a romantic fool who believes in fairy tales, I’d want us to always be as romantic as we are today. Five years from now when we go on a drive, I want us to be excited at the thought of being together and holding hands.
*Do you see yourself doing traditional wifely things? Shoaib, do you expect it? *
Sania: I guess I’ll have to. Yesterday, for the first time I found myself putting clothes on a hanger and into the closet, and they were his clothes. (Laughs) I don’t cook because it just doesn’t appeal to me.
Shoaib: It really doesn’t matter whether she cooks or not.
With both of you travelling constantly, how are you going to take out time for each other?
Shoaib: I think we are very secure in our relationship so it won’t bother us so much. We are going to be together for a lifetime so it won’t be very difficult to stay away from each other for a few weeks or months.
Sania: Besides, we play in a lot of neutral countries, so we can travel with each other or fly to meet. Anyway, it’s temporary. I’ll probably play for another three to four years.
Have you discussed babies?
Sania: That’s too far into the future. I’m going to play for a few more years so it’ll only be after that.
Shoaib: People will think that this question is very valid now that we are married. I like kids.
Sania: Kids don’t like me though. They always cry when they come to me.
Shoaib: Don’t worry, our kids won’t cry. (laughs)n
