Salamz,

We will be going to the SanFran and LA for a total of 10 days in January. What do you recommend seeing in SF and LA, keeping in mind that we have two kids age 3 and under 1 year.

Quite a few people have mentioned Alcatraz cruise at SF. Is it worth it?

Any hotels/motels can you suggest? I prefer to stay near Union square in SF. Is renting a car a good idea or should I use transit?

Rent a car. BART takes too long to take you from one place to the other as it stops a lot. I am sure same with the bus. Especially cause you have 2 kids with you, its worth extra money to rent.

I plan to drive from SF to LA. Can anyone tell me how the drive is? Any concern in driving after sunset? I am thinking of starting the trip at 3pm leaving SF.

If you leave at 3PM you should make it before sundown most likely. Keep in mind the days are getting longer and the sun goes down late on the west coast. Since you are going to California you might as well rent a sports car though right? Convertible in January? I would do it for sure. Have a great time out in California, too bad you aren’t able to link San Diego in to that trip!
