I’ll be living in SJ for 3-6 mos. maybe more not really sure yet…
Just wanted to know what the price range is for a studio or 1 br apt?
What is SJ good for? Are there alotta desis, restaurants, etc?
And is there much of a nightlife there or is LA better?
For apartment rentals, depends on the location you are looking at. Near SJSU (downtown) you can save on apartment rent ($500-800) however the area is not super-safe. If you go to classier South San Jose or West San Jose, a 1-bedroom will rent from $1000-1200 per month. Near ultra-chic Santana Row, expect to spend close to $1500.
Many desis. Many desi restaurants and tons of halal restaurants too. Check zabihah.com for complete listings.
Plan to drive as public transport (light rail and bus system) is kinda patchy. And if you have a ride then there are excellent eating outlets within 20 minutes drive (Milpitas, Palo Alto, Fremont).
San Jose downtown has some clubs (mostly students) and Santana Row has pretty decent lounge scene (pricey), but for real night life, people just drive 1 hour to San Francisco.
Faisal has already mentioned a lot about SJ .............. but if u'll be here try yr best to check out nearby attractions like san francisco(downtown + wharf), monterey bay , santa cruz , half moon bay etc , all r at a driving distance of 45 min- 2 hrs from SJ.
^ Its people that really make a place interesting. Any place can be boring if you don't know people. Comparing and contrasting with other cities, San Jose offers an excellent climate all year round, great job opportunities (especially for techies) and a great diverse community. Its pricey so cost of living is higher, and that a negative. San Jose is kinda in the middle of Silicon Valley so for the night life lover, San Francissco is only an hour drive; and for out doorsy type people, beaches, hiking trails, skiing and pretty much all other activities are within driving distance for day trips. Unlike San Francisco the city is laid out so there is no congestion. However, again unlike most other major US cities (NY, Chicago, San Francisco etc), San Jose has no soul. Its almost an entirely new city where a building is considered 'old' when its merely 30-40 years old.
