What’s the weather like? Any seasonal things to see / do in the winter (no touristy stuff). I will be travelling alone a lot, most likely, so the stuff has to be on the public transportation route.
Re: San Fransisco in winter
It's cold bring sweaters or a jacket, downtown is nice during the day. Really depends on what you like doing, there is theatre, museums, visiting market street is an activity on its own, the piers, there is always some sort of festival on the weekends…lots of stuff.
The public transportation is easy to figure out and takes you everywhere and a lot more convenient than traveling via a rental or your own car, because parking is an itch in this city.
Re: San Fransisco in winter
SF is always cold after sunset, even in summers, and requires jackets and blankets when you are outdoors. Winters are even colder. It doesn't usually snow, though.
Re: San Fransisco in winter
Yeah I was there in September and it was cold, very windy. Did the regular touristy things but this time I want to see some plays, musicals etc. I will have about two weeks there.
Belle, what kind of festivals? Where are they held? And where's market street?
Is there anything like Chicago's Devon street? I want to do some desi shopping if possible.
And oh, what's the best place for affordable seafood!
Are there any major desi events going on in late Dec / early Jan?

Sarah,
Check out this thread on SF. http://www.paklinks.com/gs/showthread.php?t=158797&highlight=bay+area
Re: San Fransisco in winter
Okay scratch that you might not like market street if your not into shopping. Where will you be staying so I can tell you how to get there if you still want to check it out.
Sea food place would be Joe’s crab shack, Sea Lion Café or Pier market restaurant, very affordable, all on Fishermen’s Warf.
I’m not familiar with the desi stuff in SF yet, I all I know is Naan n’ Curry is much better than Shalimar. Berkeley which is 30 mins drive out of SF has a lot of indo/pak stores though, and you can take the BART there.
You didn’t say what month your coming but check this out for the fairs and festivals
