San Francisco wants to ban circumcision

Would Muslims be concerned if the ban takes place?

Lloyd Schofield wants to add a new law to the books in San Francisco: A ban on all male circumcisions.
Those who violate the ban could be jailed (not more than one year) or fined (not more than $1,000), under his proposal. Circumcisions even for religious reasons would not be allowed. At this point, Schofield’s proposal is an idea that would have to clear several hurdles to be considered.

Schofield and like-minded advocates who call themselves “intactivists” seek to make it “unlawful to circumcise, excise, cut, or mutilate the whole or any part of the foreskin, testicles, or penis” of anyone 17 or younger in San Francisco.

While widespread in the United States, circumcision rates could be falling, according to recent surveys. While nationally the circumcision rate has remained steady, the most dramatic decline occurred in the West, where it fell from 64 percent in 1974 to 37 percent in 1999. Earlier this year, there were unconfirmed estimates that the circumcision rate had fallen to fewer than half for boys born in U.S. hospitals,

Intactivists also say:
– Circumcisions are not medically necessary and violate the child’s body.
– It requires a medical procedure, which carries risk of complications and pain.
– Foreskins are part of the natural body to help protect the penis and may reduce sexual sensitivity in adulthood.

Proponents say:
– Circumcision can reduce the risk of penile cancer, a rare disease.
– It is part of traditional, religious practices in Jewish and Muslim faiths.

Re: San Francisco wants to ban circumcision

Since Jews also practice it , I doubt it will become a law . If only Muslims were doing it , given the situation now a days , it would become a law in no time.

Re: San Francisco wants to ban circumcision

Looks like Lloyd Schofield Vs Jews. :p

Re: San Francisco wants to ban circumcision

The inactivists (whoever they are) are unwise ... for sure.

Or perhaps they are just trying to maximise on their product. I bet Schofield has shares in a cancer cream pharmaceutical company.

Re: San Francisco wants to ban circumcision

Majority of the world (men ) almost 70% are uncircumcised. Estimates of the proportion of males that are circumcised worldwide vary from one-sixth](Circumcision - Wikipedia) to a third. The WHO has estimated that 664,500,000 males aged 15 and over are circumcised (30% global prevalence), with almost 70% of these being Muslim

Re: San Francisco wants to ban circumcision

On the other hand Uganda has started a mass circumcision drive of adult males to reduce HIV rates.

Relax, there are many things many ppl want here, esp in US. But not everything can come true. Let them say wutever but its not gonna happen.

Re: San Francisco wants to ban circumcision

Leaving aside the medical advantages or disadvantages of circumcision, I have always wondered why would God create something only wanting us to correct it, why wouldn't he not have it there in the first place? And even if he did make a mistake in having it there, why not correct it later on? Also, what did He expect of people before the discovery of blades and scalpels? I am not being sarcastic or anything, I genuinely want to know how believers think about this as I am sure similar thoughts must have come across many people's minds.
