Samsung Blackjack II (SGH-i617) - Anyone have it? just doing some research on a new smartphone… but nothing too extravagant or expensive. This one seems like a good choice on the outset.
I’ve done my google search, CNET reviews etc. - just looking for personal opinions from fellow GS members now…

I have it... I really like it its nice and slick. But the only bad thing is, when u set pictures as ur wall paper it doesnt fill up the whole screen, it like takes a portion of the picture and expands that to the whole screen. ( I dont know know if that made sense) Also it doesnt let you set personalized ring tones for alarms or messages, it only lets you set them for as a ringer for a phone call. But overall I like the phone.

I don't want to restart PlayPod that often. Ten minutes is not enough to evaluate the product.

I will seriously advise you against a Windows powered smartphone. Over the last 5 years, I put myself through two such devices (cummulative 2.5 years) and completely swore off them. Yes, there are many types of add-on software available for them, but the job of a phone is to be a reliable phone first. Not to freeze up, re-boot, have all kinds of error messages popping up at the most inopportunate times etc. Almost all my friends who have Windows powered smart-phones are unhappy. Only yesterday, I drove with a friend of mine who has BlackJack's original model and there was this beep sound coming from the phone every few seconds. I asked him what the heck is that and he said its some kind of error message that just refuses to go away (the guy works for Cisco and knows all about computers and IT). He was cursing Windows Mobile and said he couldn't wait till his company begins to support iPhone and Blackberry so he can dump this "paper weight" and get a decent device.
I understand that Windows Mobile keeps on improving, but I am not convinced MS still knows how to make an OS for a small mobile device.
If you can wait a bit, just get Blackberry Bold (should be released in August or September) by RIM. Else, get an iPhone or some other BB.

I agree with you in part, Windows based devices have skd for most part so far, but wait for the device from smartphone inventor later this year ;)

I know about the windows issues, but Ive used the BJ2 for a few months, never had any problems. On the BJ1 I always used to get this low battery indicator problem which had something to do with the ATD pin or module inside being dead, because the battery would work just fine.

aah... too late guys... I bought one almost a month ago and so far haven't had to face any problems.
I app unlocked it - installed a few dozen hacks and customized it to my liking... I think it's a great phone for someone who doesn't quite need to glitz of an iphone just yet.
I've been using a Windows based smartphone for the last four years now and haven't really had any issues with the OS or the apps per say. I guess it depends on specific usage and any admin restrictions on the device itself (which I assume would be a major issue for corporate phones). So far so good... I intend to keep the phone for about 16 - 20 months before upgrading to something like a Samsung Instinct.

I had an O2 PDA with Windows Mobile 5.0 and it was a mess. Crashing, hanging, rebooting, and all sort of instability issues were the norm of the day. Microsoft Outlook saved my life on each occasion. However, last year O2 released the Windows Mobile 6.0 for my model and after upgrading the software, I did not have any issue at all. I worked like a charm. Early this year, however, my PDA was stolen!

The US version doesn't. Mine is the UK version SGH-i600, and it does have wifi.
