Same names

A decade ago, it was considered very bad, if someone name their children, similar to names of children of distant relatives. I heard that ladies of the families have tussle on this issue.

Now the situation has changed a little, but still people try to avoid this.

Whats the position in other cultures. I heard that in some cultures like Arabs it is motivated.

Re: Same names

ermm.. i dont know much.. but yeah.. my dads eldest bro called murtaza passed away whn hez was lil boy.. n my dadi kept same name for her other son ... and 11 years ago he passed away too... he was second last child and now they are 8 borthers and sisters.. and when my baby was born i wanted to give him name.. but my dAd refused.. he sed no... its not good
it happnd twice already

Re: Same names

but that is a separate thing. There is no issue for naming your children behind the names of deceased persons. I have seen many cases, where small children are called dada / dadi, because they carry names of their deceased grandparents

Re: Same names

yup.. thats whatt i said but no one agreed.. they said... its just name effecting (wth)

Re: Same names

My chacha’s son, who lives in Canada, had a baby last year and named his son the same name as my eldest son (we live in US) so now there are two children in the family with the exact same first and last name…it made me giggle…who cares! I don’t own intellectual rights to the name… :hehe:

Re: Same names

My Amma was angry with her first cousin, because she named her son similar to mine (born just a week after me). We have same names and castes and went in same school and same class. the teachers have to add middle names to recognise us. :hehe: Students used to refer us ‘chota’ and ‘baRa’ :smack:

Re: Same names

No one has my name ^_^

Re: Same names

I heard that in Arabs, they distinguish similar names by putting awwal, sani as suffix of the similar names and the elder person having same name take that as a compliment and send gifts to the family of new born

Re: Same names

Incidently my name happens to be same as my Saas's grandmother, therefore still she don't call me by my name :D

Re: Same names

what she calls you then.. Dadi to nahin kehti?

Re: Same names

:omg:

Re: Same names

my mother’s two cousin have same name..and thats why they are also called as BaRa sadiq and chhota Sadiq…

in my family my two cousins have same name like me…i am the elder one…

one my mom’s cousin named his two sons just like me and my brother…

but i dont like people having same name…there are so many beautiful names out there so why settle for same names…

Re: Same names

Name is not anyone’s personal property nor a copyright so anyone chose to keep any name they like for their kids. And nor have we invented names ourselves that we feel bad about it. What amazes me is that people name their kids after their deceased old relatives (grandparents paternal or maternal) and then they start calling their kids with some nick names that they give them. kyu ke baron ka nam nahi lete they to bacho ko bhi nick name se bulane lagte hain :smack:

When my younger sister was born my parents gave her a really beautiful name that is not that common even in today’s time…and you don’t get to hear it a lot. After a week or 2 one of my aunts also had a baby daughter and she gave her that same name and told everyone that we had copied her choice of name since she had already told us that she would be naming her own baby that. So when my mother heard about this from a lot of people my mother changed my sister’s name for good.:D,Now that my sister is all grown up she tells us that it was good that my mother changed her name because she doesn’t even like that name and wouldn’t have liked to be called by that name at all.

They say that a person’s name has an effect on his or her personality. So my question here is that then why and how come do two people who have the same name(s) possess totally different personalities from each other? :hmmm:

Re: Same names
