Could be many reason
Having a pinch of salt before food , some say islamically encourage
Can be its cheap compare with rest of spices
Or having some after having nausea from travelling/moving in

because whenever I think of spices, this is the order it comes into my mind :
namak, mirch, haldi and so on ????

So that if some neighbor vists them, they can feed them and tell them "jee aap nai hamarey ghar ka namak khaya hai"

My mom once said in this regard either moving or reaching home after a long flight (been there done that as a child)…
All you need is salt and eggs…and that can be your dinner with pita bread…scrambled eggs that is. Now if you didn’t have salt I don’t know what kinda dinner that would be…![]()

oh and just to keep the record straight, in our household, TEA bags is the first thing that gets unpacked coz without that, we cant really go further in unpacking :)

^^ Ohhh we must be rishtay-daars.....same deal here....chai ki patti has its own box which is labeled and can be easily identified right from the trunk of the car

I have never heard this about salt.....
