Re: Salman’s “rock Stars And The Mullahs” Doc Wins Top

Thats awesome! 20th June at Columbia University, I have to get in touch with them to find out if they can make it to the US by then!

i saw the documentary and was really offended when salman ahmed sets a verse of the quran to music. I mean no matter how liberal a muslim you are, the quranic verses, being Allah's words, are not meant to be sung using guitars and what not...

unbelievable. this "documentary" was nothing but sensationalist BS. it made as much sense as would interviewing Bin Laden for his interpretation of Islam and passing that off as the real message of Islam.

bashing Pakistan, Islam and everything related is in vogue. put together some words - madrassas, Islam, terrorism, and lo behold you have a masterpiece worthy of international awards. yeah right..

Can you tell me where the documentary was bashing Islam or Pakistan? Have u even seen it? Its a portrayal, no comments have been made. It targets these these mollahs, look around you whats happening in Pakistan right now? Sectarian killings are at their peak, and we have our religious zealots, both sunnis and shias calling each other kafirs. These are the same people who were discussed in the documentary. Its easy for you to ignore that? You love these mollahs so much, why dont you goto Pakistan and help them in their missions? Its easy to migrate abroad and let others face the heat of sectarian violence. The truth was portrayed in this documentary, and for those who support such things, the truth really hurts.

Salman is also coming up with another documentary soon for BBC, and that would be even better, he has interviewed the fundos in Pakistan, now hes going to get the idiots in the west in his documentary. I am glad we have such people around.

There is also another Pakistani woman from Karachi who won an award, 'terrors children' (portrayal of Afghani kids in Pakistan) for her senior year project for Stanford I think. Hats off to both of them!

Spock will you justify salman ahmed's singing a quranic verse as well

First tell me, have you seen the documentary? I do not want to waste my time if you have not. Otherwise, you could find the old thread on this topic, I do not want to retype all that...

Someone was kind enough to forward the link to me, if you missed the discussion, its not my fault...

Pm me if u want it.

not only have i seen it, i have it recorded with me...i was gonna put up that bit in the videos section but dont want to go thru the hassle.
I've seen your posts criticizing Musharaf for his anti-mullah position, and now here you yourself start blaming the ills of society on the mullahs just because a wanabe rock star said so...some hypocrisy on your part dont you think...

If you are referring to the Wana operation, I did criticize it, that was because of another reason, not because of mollahs. Do you think I should go ahead and praise mollahs for promoting sectarian killings? You can come to the thread at PA for that. And based on your personal remark against Salman, I now understand your opinion is biased since you dont like him, so I wont bother with you.

there was a time when i did have some respect for him...but after that documentary incident i consider him a sell out. when your country faces some internal crisis, you dont go making foriegn documentaries for the whole world to see what a **** hole your motherland is...instead you try to create dialogue and knock some sense into them(mullahs)

If you saw it, did you see him go in a madrassah and talk to the students there? As for the world, why is it wrong for the world to see, when our own people are sitting abroad defending mollahs and sectarianism.

We need ‘enlightened moderation’ — President Pervez Musharraf

he could have gone to the madrassah himself...why were the cameras neceassary??? it was obvious that salman ahmed had an agenda of his own (please goras?? well if thats the case then i dont know why you complain about Musharaf :) ) imo if you want to create dialogue you send educated scholars from fez or al-azhar to clear out the concerns of the mullahs. do you seriously think that the mullahs in pakistan will actually listen to salman ahmed.

Well, he told me he has been there about 20 times already. And yes, if you observe closely those guys did listen to him, and he listened to them too. As for Musharraf, I complained about his anti-mollah agenda? Can you be a little specific?

20 times you say eh...and 20 times it did not work so did salman all of a sudden think that the 21st time, with the world watching on tv, make a difference. here is my take on the program:

1) this program was shown on PBS, a tv station with a tilt towards the neo-cons in US (and u know their agenda)
2) name of documentary: rockstar and mullah ---hmmmm, what are you trying to portray...that this country has an innate contradiction, and if the mullahs ever take control they will unleash the nukes on the civilized world.
3) host was mishail hussain from the bbc...bbc, eh?? wasnt this the channel that announced the fall of lahore in 65. And now all of a sudden they care about the plight of Pakistan??
4) nancy powel comes at the end saying that we must try our best to prevent the mullahs from coming into power....hmmm wasnt it the carpet bombing of afghanistan by the USA that prompted the ppl into voting the mullahs into power

you can broadcast 100's of documentaries like this, and i guarantee that it wont change a thing for the better

Dont tell me you honestly think Salman 'made' the documentary? He didnt name it, he was asked to appear in it. I think you should go back and read the old thread here, I feel like Im repeating everything here.

and the fact that he accepted the invitation to appear in it speaks volumes about a) how much he loves his country or b) how dumb he is

Should he love the mollahs? Kher, once agian I feel like im wasting time here, its redundant, you can refer to what I said in the old thread. I have no love for these mollahs. Go and see whats happening in Karachi these days. If you want to discuss them further…

Also, hes making a documentary where he will get some pro-bush supporters, and there will be some well known names, what do you think of that? The mirror has two faces, and he will expose them too.

It was good discussing this topic with you though

sectarian violence in karachi is not a new phenomenon. Are the mullahs responsible?? Partially yes. Will hating the mullahs and shutting them off solve the crisis?? Hell no
The point i'm trying to make is that no matter how bad the situation is, you just dont start bad mouthing ur country men. If that would solve the problem, I would be the first to acknowledge it. But since it would do more harm for eg give an ill-informed person the impression that pakistan is a haven for terrorist, i am strongly against it. Yet what i propose is that instead of sending ppl like salman ahmed to have debates with mullahs, we send a scholar from fez or al-azhar to speak with them. I WOULD LOVE TO WATCH THAT DOCUMENTARY. But alas no anti-muslim (anti-pakistani) corparation will make any...
